It's the philosophy of business in the 1990's. It's also the philosophy behind Hart Ford Mer- cury, according to owner John Hart. "The industry as a whole is becoming much more service - friendly," he said. "The dealer is going to have to go the extra mile to give customer service." Mr. Hart purchased the dealership from Gerald Groothuis in January of 1985 and says the automobile industry has been changing ever since. Computerization has become an integral part of the automobile industry and Hart's service depart- ment has been working hard to keep pace with the technological advancements. Mechanics are sent to school several times a year to become updated on changes and new technology. Direct computer link -ups with Ford help increase the speed and flow of information. In late 1993 another dimension to 41r. the business was added when Hart Ford Mercury Used Cars was cre- ated with Len Teatero as president. "It allows us to carry more vehicles and have a better selec- tion," said John, adding that Len has the same service-oriented phil- osophy Hart's has always main- tained. Although the location changed, the emphasis on service did not, according to John. Hart's service includes providing loaner cars and helping meet the needs of customers. "We have to do everything we can for the customer," he said. Customers are more knowledge- able and expect the dealer and staff to provide top-quality service. One of the important features sought by today's intelligent con- sumer is safety. "Safety features on vehicles are becoming more and more strin- gent," said Mr. Hart. There is now roadside assistance for all new cars. Other changes to the automobile industry include more fuel-efficient cars. Cash back rebates and low interest rates have made the industry much more com- petitive and to the buyer's advan- tage. The owner of the local car outlet praises Ford for building world- class cars which are setting trends in the industry. Ford has pioneered aerodynamic styling which has changed the face of the automobile industry. The local business is also sensi- tive to environmental needs with the latest technology to recycle coolant from air conditioners. Almost everything is recycled at the business from radiators to batteries to oil to anti -freeze to air filters to tires. "Nothing goes to the dump any more," said Len Teatero, president of Hart Ford -Mercury Used Cars. Hart's is a Seaforth business which is showing substantial growth. In the past five years the business has almost doubled in the size of staff, now employing 13 people. Customers at the Seaforth auto- mobile outlet are drawn to the less - aggressive sales style of a small- town enterprise. "We try to take that anxiety out of purchasing a new or used vehicle," said owner John Hart. "We like to stand by our name, 'the friendly dealer.'" Hart Ford -Mercury is a three -time winner of the Ford Distinguished Dealer Award.
