Ray and Barb Storey of RR #1
Seaforth come from a long line of
syrup makers. It is inherited on
both sides of the family. In fact,
Barb has a cousin and a great uncle
who presently tap. The Storey oper-
ation is unique because they rent
trees.
Ray and Barb started making
maple syrup commercially in 1983.
They saw a potential market. Start-
ing out small they built up cus-
tomers. Now the Storeys produce
200 gallons of syrup a year, selling
the finished product at the farm
gate, a few stores and farmer's
markets and craft shows.
Last year the company introduced
maple -flavoured sausage at the
Goderich Farmer's Market. This
product went over quite well. The
Storeys also carry smoked pork
chops, ham and bacon. Their cus-
tom butchering is done at
Thompson's in Brussels.
People at markets and craft shows
like to talk to the people who
actually make the products they
sell. The customer gets a sense of
trust from the producer. Knowing
the product is fresh and has no
additives means a lot to people too.
Last year customers were asking
for plastic containers for syrup.
This spring the Storeys will have
them available as well as a variety
of sizes of glass and un containers.
It's important to the Storeys to
listen to their customer's wants and
needs. They have received many
favourable comments on their prod-
ucts such as their syrup is the best
and no others compare to the fla-
vour. Their new maple -flavoured
sausages have received favourable
reviews too.
Their primary market is local but
often people take their syrup to
other countries when visiting.
The Storeys expect their Pork
Product sales to continue to grow
along with the sale of maple syrup
and related products.
In the future, Winthrop Maple
Syrup and Pork Products would like
to establish a small showroom
long history
maple syrup
building to retail their maple goods
and pork products. Presently their
house and shed are used for retail
outlets.

Box Furniture has fine furniture
Gary and Barbara Beales of
Seaforth have been managing the
Box Furniture store on Main St. for
the last 12 years. In 1982, the
Betties took over the business from
the Box family, who previously ran
the ftuniture business at the 20
Main St. South location since the
1940s. Gary (or 'Cub') Betties had
worked for the Box family since
1969.
Prior to that the building had
many uses including a movie the-
atre, pool hall and funeral home.
Renovations were done to the
storefront in 1990 with partial fund-
ing from the Heritage Ontario pro-
gram.
About eight years ago, Box Furni-
ture expanded its floor space taking
in the neighbouring store, a former
hair salon. Box's now has about
7,700 square feet of total display
space on three different floors.
In the last three years, the store
has added pine bedroom furniture
and occasional pieces to their exten-
sive line of in-store merchandise.
Barb Bettles is pleased to say that
