Modern conveniences at building
continued from page five
In its early days the house was
known as Lorne Villa, named for
the then -current Governor-General
of Canada, the Marquis of Lorne.
From Leonard McFaul the property
passed to his son-in-law, James
Mullen, who was the manager of
the Seaforth bank in the 1910's.
During this time Lome Villa
became known as the Mullen
House. It remained so for many
years until Mabel Grace McFaul
came to own it. She was the last of
the McFaul family to own the
house. At that time the building was
renovated and became the Lorne
Villa apartments. The property was
later sold.
Lome Villa is an example of what
is called a Victorian vernacular
style. This type of architecture was
popular from 1870 to 1890. Fea-
tures of this style include the large
veranda and two-storey bay win-
dow. The complexity of the roof
line adds a sense of sophistication.

Hair salon has
new services
and products
The owner of All Styles II hair
salon says she's looking forward to
'the challenge of change.'
Manicures, facials and a line of
body products for people with
allergies are all new services and
products offered at All Styles II.
"In the future I'd like to introduce
a full-service salon," said Elsie
Wiliems, owner of All Styles II.
"Our business is growing and
becoming more sensitive to
people's wants and needs."
The business was purchased nine
years ago. The owner of the enter-
prise says she has two terrific
employees, Heidi Soudant and
Karen Ryan, plus a part-time
esthetician, Bonnie Johnston and
Barb Forrest will be joining the
staff in July.
The business, which offers the
best in professional hair care prod-
ucts, is geared to people.
"The people are a big factor in
my business," said Elsie, who says
she enjoys making people feel good
about themselves.
All Styles II is located at 65 Main
Street in Seaforth.
home had two large formal par-
lours, a library, dining room and in
the back and basement there were
kitchens and work space. The wide
grand staircase leads to the second
floor where there were at least three
bedrooms and an indoor bath with
running water. Quite a luxury at the
time! The attic was left unfinished.
In the early 1970's Mable Grace
McFaul and her husband Stuart
Crouch renovated the large home
into a five -unit apartment building.
In the late 1980's Liz and George
Hardeman bought Lome Villa and
added another five units, restructur-
ing the older renovations and utiliz-
ing the space in the attic and base-
ment. All of the work has been
done with a sympathetic hand to
preserve the heritage aspects of the
home. The front entry hall still
functions as the main access to the
building and the individual units
and has the original light fixture
and stair.
On the first and second floor in
the front section of the house (for-
merly the parlours, library, dining
room, and bedrooms) the original
room sizes, heights and decorative
features have been maintained. In
these four apartments there are
seven original marbleized slate
fireplaces, hardwood floors and
decorative plaster mouldings. This
area also retains the original wood-
work including the indoor shutters
and, in the bay windows, the semi-
circular wood curtain rods.
Mr. and Mrs. Hardeman used the
existing architectural features to
design units of a more modern feel
in the rest of the house. Bright
skylights and balconies add a
unique quality to these new apart-
ments. All of the units are equipped
with modern conveniences includ-
ing controlled access. Lorne Villa
now preserves the gracious feel of
late nineteenth-century elegance
while providing the latest in modern
facilities. The building is managed
by a Seaforth resident and has
become a quiet and luxurious place
to live.
