Community
Seaforth high
school part of
peer mentor
program
BY AMY NEILANDS
The Huron County peer mentors
met with community service pro-
viders at Connections, held at the
Clinton Legion on Wednesday,
June 1.
This day -long workshop gave
the 130 participating peer mentors
the chance to meet members of
the services and also gave the
service members the chance to
learn more about the peer
mentoring program.
The peer mentoring program is
run in all five Huron County high
schools: Central Huron Secondary
School, Goderich District Colle-
giate Institute, Seaforth District
High School, South Huron District
High School, and F.E. Madill
Secondary School. Peer mentoring
evolved from the START pro-
gram, a stay in school program.
Students are recruited and trained
through their guidance depart-
ments and the START program to
become peer mentors. Mentors are
trained in peer helping skills and
have specialized training in sexual
assault awareness.
The program is there to help
Grade 7, 8, and 9 students through
the difficult transition of high
school. Students in Grade 10 or
11 are chosen to be paired with a
Grade 7, 8, or 9 student to help
them through this transition. Ele-
mentary school teachers choose a
student who they think may need
a little extra help or support and
pair them with a mentor from the
high school. Starting high school
can be a difficult time for young
adolescents and the peer mentors
have already gone through that
and know how hard it can be.
"We are all adolescents facing
the same problems," said Michelle
Ducharme, student coordinator of
the peer mentoring program at
South Huron District High School.
After the morning warm-up
exercises, Ducharme introduced
the mentoring program, and men-
tors from each high school made
presentations on what their pro-
gram has done.
Central Huron Secondary School
is one of the newest high schools
to join the program. Along with
the mentoring, they have set up a
sexual assault committee to help
anyone who has been sexually
assaulted. They also make presen-
tations within the high school like
skits and videos, as ways of pres-
enting statistics and creating dis-
cussions regarding sexual assault.
"It's been great...we've
had a lot of response..."
"It's been great. We've had a lot
of good response," said Tyler
Hessels, a peer mentor and
coordinator of the sexual assault
committee.
South Huron also has a sexual
assault team and they just began a
drop-in centre. It is open every
Wednesday at lunch and anyone
can go in to get help or just to
talk.
The peer mentors have become
very active and well-recognized in
their respective schools. Some
activities that they have done
include pizza parties, baseball,
volleyball, gym nights,
tobogganing, and car washes.
"Growth has just been incred-
ible," said Val Millson, the board
office coordinator of the peer
mentoring program and the
START program.
The mentors have also received
administrative support.
"The program you people are in
is very special," said Paul Carroll,
director of education at the Huron
County Board of Education. "I
will support and nurture in any
way I can."
Members of the community
services involved with peer
mentoring made presentations on
what their service provides and
how they can help the mentors
and their partners.
