at Manor for
'cowpoke days'
'Howdy Pardner', 'Giddy -up' and
'Ride'em Cowboy' were just a few
of the things said during Cowpoke
Days in the month of May at the
Seaforth Co-operative Children's
Centre. Children enjoyed westem
activities including dressing up like
cowpokes, horseback riding (on
rocking horses), lassoing And trying
a cowpoke meal of beef jerky.
The Health Unit came to the
Centre and watched attentively as
they performed a skit about
'Jennifer's Loose Tooth.'
To finish off the month of May
the theme is 'Under the Sea.' The
children are enjoying the fish pond
and fountain stocked with minnows
and crayfish. On. May 27 the
children visited Seaforth Manor
with 'Under the Sea' songs includ-
ing 'There was a little turtle.'

World Cup skier speaks
BY AMY NEILANDS
Meredith Gardner shared her
experiences as ..a World Cup
freestyle skier with the peer men-
tors at their Connections workshop
on Wednesday.
Gardner delivered an important
message to the peer mentors that
they can share with their partners.
"Don't let someone crush your
dreams," she said as she shared
her dreams with the mentors.
Gardner has been freestyle ski-
ing since she was 12. She said she
liked the combination of skiing,
dance and gymnastics. Her dream
at the time was to make the
national freestyle team. She
wanted to become a professional
skier and had no plans of attend-
ing university.
A teacher she had in Grade 13
heard of her dream to ski on the
national team and told her that it
was a waste of her time and that
she should get her priorities
straight.
Proving her teacher wrong, she
made the national team.
"It was my dream come true,"
she said.
She found it hard not knowing
anyone and not placing well in her
competitions. She was excited,
though, to be travelling and skiing
and continued to do her best.
In her fourth World Cup season,
she placed third at a competition
in Quebec. That's when she real-
ized that there was "no reason
why I couldn't be world champ."
"There's no reason why it
couldn't happen to me," she said.
She did become the world aerial
champion and has won a total of
79 World Cup medals. When she
became burnt out from skiing, she
decided to go back to school to
become a journalist. Once again
she was told her dream was stu-
pid, and was asked why she
would throw away her skiing
career.
"There may be one negative
voice and a thousand positive
voices," she said. "Don't let that
one negative voice turn you
away."
