KRUNCHIE ,79 PERCH 4 _ Education High school athletes honoured BY TIM CUMMING Expositor Editor High school athletes honoured outgoing teachers Brian O'Connell and Warren Hill during the athletic achievement night on Wednesday. "It is so hard for me to say good- bye, when you've got kids like this up here," said an obviously -moved Brian O'Connell. -Students from Seaforth District High School were also recognized for their athletic successes and contributions to the athletic pro- gram. Mrs. Jean Pinder presented the first Bill Pinder Memorial Award, for an 'unsung hero' in the athletic program, to Robyn Carnochan. Brian Dillon and Lori Perrie were named senior athletes of the year while junior athlete honours went to Bruce Griffin and Carly Price. Monica Ryan and Kim Baan were recognized at the banquet for ath- letic contribution. Kara Murray was honoured for showing team leadership and enthusiasm on the Midget Girls Basketball team. Carly Price was named Rookie of the Year on the Junior Girls Basketball team. Monica Ryan was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the Senior Girls Basketball team. The Senior Boys basketball MVP was Brian Dillon while Dylan Wick was Junior MVP. Bruce Griffin was honoured on the Midget Boys bas- ketball team. Cheryl Thompson was declared Most Enthusiastic team member of the Midget Girls volleyball squad. The teacher was honoured for his six years as an active coach at the school. He is leaving the school to teach at South Huron District. High School. Team shared the Spirit and Leader- ship Award for Junior Girls Volley- ball. Most Consistent Player for the Senior Girls team was Sarah Johnston. Brian Bachert was MVP for the Junior Boys Volleyball team while Eric Johnston was Senior MVP. Monica Ryan was presented with an award for team leadership and desire on the girls soccer team. Susan McLaughlin won the over - all female curler award and Kevin Coleman won the male curler award. Most dedicated track and field athletes were Carly Price and Bruce Griffin. Most improved athlete awards were presented to Chad McCallum and Erin Nicholson. Scott Wood won the boys' low --gas `awaid acid Brian Dillon was named the Most Enthusiastic Tennis Player. Jennifer Gallagher was selected to go the Bark Lake leadership camp. As part of the recognition awards Marcy McCall won the Deb Dawson Sportsmanship Award. Eric Johnston was presented with the Intramural Award. Brian O'Connell has taught at Seaforth District High School for six years and has coached several sports. He is leaving to teach at South Huron District High School. The students at the school had become like a second family, he said. "I have the greatest respect for all of them, they're a tremendous group of kids.” Warren Hill is leaving to teach in Waterloono Cuty. Award winners included (front row) Monica Ryan, Brian Dillon, Eric Johnston, Brian Bachert, Chad McCallum, Kim Baan, (second row) Christa Leonhardt, Jen Gallagher, Marcy McCall, Sandra Dale, Erin Nicholson, Sarah Johnston, (back row) Susan McLachlan, Robyn Carnochan, Kara Murray, Carly Price, Cheryl Thompson, Dylan Wick, Scott Wood and Bruce Griffin. TIM COMM NG PHOTO BILL PINDER MEMORIAL AWARD PRESENTED - 11 was an emotional moment at the 1993-94 Athletic Awards for Seaforth District High School when the Bill Pinder Memorial Award was presented for the first time. The award recognizes an 'unsung hero' in the athletic program. Here Mrs. Jean Pinder presents the award to Robyn Camochan. Fitness Fanatics meet The St. Columban Fitness Fanactics meeting was opened by Julianne Ryan. The minutes were read and adopted by Amy Elston. We then read Dying to be Thin. We had a guest speaker, Rod Selves, who spoke on anorexia neruosa. Afterwards, we practised our dances for achievement night and we also had a question and answer period. 4 Finally, each group thought up a dress -code and a name for each group that has to dance at achieve- ment night. --.._ Our achievement night is on June 16, 1994 in the basement of the St. Columban Church. Tricia Jansen motioned the meeting adjourned and Jeannette Crowley seconded the meeting to be adjourned. We then said the 4-H model. Lori Perrie was named top Sen- ior Female Athlete at SDHS. Fitness expert Julie Twynham. Exercise adds life says local guest speaker Individual exercise will maintain fitness after team sports are no longer so convenient, high school athletes were told on Wednesday night. "When you graduate you won't have the availability of teams as much," said Julie Twynam, a for- mer student of Seaforth District High School. "Invest in your health, it is your future...fitness not only adds life to your years but years to your life." The successful fitness consultant had a full gymnasium of people standing up and stretching to begin her talk on fitness. She told the audience a Little activity can not only improve health but it can relieve stress. If you feel frustrated about something go out- side and take a walk, she suggested. The guest speaker at the 1993-'94 Athletic Awards said she recalled coming to the Seaforth school for grade eleven. "All of a sudden I was in a new town, a small town...it was really a shock." Twynham said the students soon made her feel very welcome. Students were told they will bene- fit from the people they have met at high school as well as learning teamwork.
