Representatives of the Roman
Catholic church and government
"bodies praised the new addition
to Si. James School after a Mass
at St. James Church on Sunday.
The new addition to the church
was also praised as respectful of
the building's architecture by
Bishop John Sherlock, who
auended the ceremony. He said
the addition will serve as a
meeting place for parishioners
after church and will create
better access for everyone.
"The addition hasn't sacrificed
the architectural integrity of the
building," he said in a television
interview after the service. "The
old style was impressive but not
very functional."
"The addition has enhanced
our church's beauty," echoed
Casey Van Bakel, chairperson of
the advisory board.
He also praised the school
addition saying he was glad a
new school didn't have to be
built away from the current site.
"Having the church and school
so close physically as well as
spiritually is a great asset."
He expressed his thanks to
Father Henry Cassano for watch-
ing over the project.
Father Cassano said the project
"was not an easy chore" but was
finally completed and demon-
strated how the school, church
and parish could work together.
Bishop John Sherlock
delivered the homily during
Trinity Sunday mass prior to the
dedication ceremony.
Following the two ceremonies
he officially opened the church
addition and school addition.
At the school he joked with
the children and showed them
his shepherd's staff, or 'crozier,'
explaining its symbolism. He
even let one youngster, eight-
year-old Derek Van Dicten, try
on his Bishop's hat or 'mitre.'
He also answered questions in
a television interview.
Bishop Sherlock said the
school addition was long over-
due. He said he was glad to hear
the spirit of cooperation which
existed in constructing the addi-
tions.
He even waded into the con -

A Review of activities at
SEAFORTH COMMUNITY HOSPITAL
Big Bike Ride for Stroke: On Sunday, May 22, some of our
hospital staff and community citizens participated in the Big
Bike Ride for Stroke held at St. Christopher's Beach in
Goderich. The Big Bike is a 30 seat bicycle from Alberta and
is being rode across Ontario. Each rider collected a minimum
of $50.00 in pledges which goes to stroke research. Three
teams participated in Huron County including the "Seaforth
Heart Throbs" led`byteam captain Val Poisson. Seaforth's
team surpassed other area teams by collecting a total of
$3,126.00. A job well done! After the ride, team members
enjoyed a volleyball game on the beach and a hot dog barbe-
cue. A great time was had by all.
Kindergarten Classes from Huron Centennial Park School,
Brucefield toured Seaforth Community Hospital recently with
their teacher, Mrs. Norma Gemmell.
Fitness Week: "If you do not have time for your health today,
you will not have health for your time tomorrow". This is the
theme permeating the halls this week at Seaforth Community
Hospital as they recognize Fitness Week. A special slate of
events has been planned including, previewing fitness videos,
step aerobics, baseball game and line dancing. These events
take place during the lunch hour and are designed to give staff
the opportunity to reflect on the theme.
Occupational Health and Safety Week is being held at
Seaforth Community Hospital June 20-26. In preparation for
this event, the Rehabilitation Department has requested hospi-
tal staff to submit back problems that they commonly deal
with in their jobs. These problems will then be addressed in a
Back Care Presentation hosted by the Rehabilitation
Department between June 20-26.
Hospital Auxiliary Report: The Annual June Banquet will be
held on June 14th at the Seaforth Legion. Guest speaker will
he Frances Teatero, Chairman of Region 2. Members and

troversial issue of shared
schools. Roman Catholic and
public schools could share facil-
ities, he said, but he passionately
defended the Separate School
system.
"The distinctiveness of the
schools are a real blessing," he
said.
The proposed savings in shared
schools sounds "simplistically
attractive." He said the move to
larger facilities may not be a
cost savings. When local boards
were disbanded in favour of
county boards "it turned out to
be a disaster," he said, raising
his voice.
The new school addition was
praised by many dignitaries who
attended Sunday's official open-
ing at St. James.
The chairperson of the Huron -
Perth Roman Catholic Separate
School Board, Louise Martin,
said Roman Catholic education
depends upon the three partners
of "home, church and school."
The MPP for Huron, Paul
Klopp, praised the Huron -Perth
Roman Catholic Separate School
Board for its cooperation with
the province.
"We have to work together,"
he stressed.
The new school setting will
help provide "the opportunities
to Team respect and understand-
ing along with academic sub-
jects," said Shirley Van Nuland,
from the regional office of the
Ministry of Education.
