Fitness expert makes exercise video
BY TIM CUMMING
Expositor Editor
A mother and daughter fitness
team from Seaforth may be coming
to a television screen near you.
Julie Twynham, a former Seaforth
resident who is a successful fitness
consultant _in_ Toronto, and her
mother, local fitness instructor
Drusilla Leitch, are featured on a
new aquatic exercise video called
Aquafit: Float to Fitness.
The video was produced at an
indoor pool in February and will be
released in French and English. The
glossy production took two days to
videotape, the first day shot entirely
underwater and the second day
above water.
The video features Drusilla's
daughter-in-law Jane Twynham, of
Seaforth, and Jane's daughter,
Paula. The show emphasizes that
exercizing in the water can be fun,
especially using a new aquatic tool,
called the 'pool noodle.' The
'noodle' is a brightly -coloured foam
cylinder about two metres long.
Designed as a pool toy for children
it's fast becoming a tool for aquatic
workouts.
Fitness has changed from a `no
pain, no gain' philosophy to one
where fitness is fun and if it hurts
it's not helping, according to
Drusilla. She says standards for
fitness instructors have become
more stringent.
"When I first started anyone
could say 'I'll teach fitness."
There aren't too many mother and
daughter fitness teams like Drusilla

and Julie. The two fitness instruc-
tors became involved with fitness
from totally different directions.
Julie was attending the University
of Waterloo where her interest was
shifting from her chosen study of
recreation to the school's dance
program. Unbeknownst to the
SDHS graduate her mother was also
becoming interested in music and
exercise.
Drusilla's first experience leading
a fitness class was a bit of a fluke.
The instructor of a fitness class was
called away and Drusilla, who was
just a participant in the class,
started to lead the class in exer-
cises. That was 15 years ago. She
has never looked back since.
"I got into it because I like fitness
and I like music," she said.
The Seaforth woman has a special
interest in aquatic programs and
exercise for older adults.
"I'm interested in fitness for the
older adult and especially aqua
fitness because it's so good for
every age group."
Today Julie does personal training
for serious fitness enthusiasts at
sophisticated urban fitness clubs
while Drusilla is busy leading
classes in small-town arenas and
pools for people who just want to

stay in shape and enjoy a fun night
out. The mother -and -daughter fit-
ness trainers appeared together on a
CITY -TV broadcast recently.
"We learn from each other," said
the proud mother.
Both mother and daughter are
qualified in their fields. Drusilla
Leitch has taken certification pro-
grams in Canada and the United
States. She has presented work-
shops to fitness professionals and
teaches in Florida in the winter.
Julie Twynham has been referred
to as one of Canada's foremost
fitness professionals. She will be
guest speaker at the athletic banquet
at Seaforth District High School on
Wednesday, June 1 (today).
The video is available for pur-
chase in Seaforth. The water fitness
video is produced by Julie's fitness
business, Body Check, a division of
TTP International.

No gays in
marriage, says
speaker at WI
Homosexual unions came under
fire at the District Annual Meeting
of the Women's Institutes.
"The ideal breeding ground for
love is a stable family with mother
and father...in this scenario there is
no room for homosexual couples,"
said Verona Snider, a foster parent
and guest speaker.
Snider, of Exeter, spoke on how
the children are paying the price of
a broken home. The family is not
the same as when couples married
years ago and stayed together '411—
death do us part,' she said. Govern-
ment has made it easier for couples
to become divorced, society has
accepted childbirth without mar-
riage, common-law couples and
homosexuality are gaining public
acceptance.
A foster parent to several
children, Verona Snider believes
society is dumping its problems on
children too young to be able to
handle it.
"Children coming into care now
are aggressive and angry and
they're lashing out," she said. "It's
only love they respond to".
She encouraged families to devote
lots of love and time to their
children. This guidance will help
them to say `no' to today's pres-
sures, she said.

Farmers up water quality
Hundreds of area farmers have
been doing their part to improve
water quality in the Maitland River.
Over the past two years about 400
projects designed to reduce bacteria
and phosphorus pollution have been
completed by landowners with the
financial assistance of the CURB
(Clean Up Rural Beaches) Program.
Under the program, grants are
available to construct manure stor-
age, to fence livestock out of water-
courses, to install milkhousc
washwater disposal systems, and to
repair private septic systems:
"Farmers and homeowners who
arc interested in taking advantage of
grant assistance in 1994 should
apply now," said Anne Loeffler,
Maitland Valley Conservation Auth-
ority (MVCA) water quality techni-
cian. Application forms and further
information are available by calling
the MVCA at 335-3557.
The CURB Program is designed
to help clean up sources of bacteria
and phosphorus pollution that affect
water quality in the Maitland, Nine
Mile and Eighteen Mile Rivers.
This voluntary program is funded
by the Ministry of the Environment
and Energy and the MVCA.
