ST. JAMES
SEPARATE SCHOOL
Seaforth's first Catholic school resulted
from the efforts of Father P. Corcoran, who
was named pastor in 1901. A larger facility
was built in 1960, and the sisters of St.
Joseph were asked to take over. They
withdrew in 1983 and their convent
closed. A new addition was completed by
September 1993.

St. James Roman Catholic Church was built
in 1869 under the guidance of Father J.
Murphy, but it was almost 30 years earlier
when Father Pierre Schneider offered the
first mass in the area. In January 1880,
Father P. Shea was appointed the first
resident pastor in Seaforth which, until it
became a parish of its own, was a mission
of St. Columban. The rectory, south of the
church was built in 1897 when Father Peter
McCabe was in charge of the parish. The
Vestibule, meeting room and restrooms
were completed in the fall of 1993. The
church was then made accessible to the
physically challenged.
