Local players shine at nationals
The five Seaforth Juvenile Boys
Broomball players that were picked
up by the Windsor -Essex All-Star
team returned home with the
Bronze medals and high spirits.
The boys travelled to Regina to
face the best in Canada at the 3rd
National Juvenile Broomball Cham-
pionships and didn't disappoint
their new team's coaches or players
one bit. The first game was against
Alberta and after a hard fought
battle the Ontario II team (Windsor -
Essex) were defeated 1-0 in over-
time. However, the Seaforth Boys
didn't do unnoticed because Kevin
Van Den Neucker was the recipient
of a game M.V.P. Award for his
outstanding performance.
The second game the team game
up on the winning end beatingNew
Brunswick 5-3 and later in the day
stunned the crowd and the highly
favored home team of Regina 1.0.
The third day of the tournament
things took a turn for the worse
when under estimation of the Que-
bec team was evident. As the team
started to come back they ran short
of time and lost 5-3. To make mat-
ters worse, the team stepped on the
ice to face the Northwest Territories
team making a vow to get back at
what had happened earlier in the
day. After a goal was called back
and bad penalties it was clear they
had to beat the refs as well as the
team from the north. After 30 min-
utes of hard fought broomball the
Territories had beaten Ontario 1-0.
Sititt, That loss put the boys into a situ-
ation to shoot for a Bronze.
Although still a bit down the boys
seized the moment and took it right
to the Nova Scotia Team. It was at
0:22 seconds of the first period
when local boy Kevin Van Den
Neucker drilled one from centre ice
that went off a Nova Scotia player
and into the net. The boys went on
to win 6-0 and another local hero
was named game M.V.P. for his
outstanding performance. Matthew
McNichol had a pair of assists and
played strong defensive.
St. Columban
loses 1st game
The St. Columban Men's Soccer
Team played their first game of the
season on Saturday and suffered a
heart -breaking loss at the hands of
the London Portuguese Club.
The first goal of the game was by
the Portuguese team when a shot
that was going over the net, came
back into play when it hit the foot-
ball uprights. The failure to blow
the whistle by the referee, led to a
Portuguese player putting a low
shot by keeper, Jason Dietz. St.
Columban would tie the game up
shortly after when Portuguese
goalie left a big, juicy rebound
lying in his crease. How John
Jordan was able to kick the ball
into the open net, while looking
pretty at the same time, may never
be explained. The half ended in a
1-1 tie.
Despite carrying most of the play
in the second half, St. Columban
was unable to pull ahead of their
opposition. Being that the Portu-
guese were unable to beat the so-
called 'farm boys' by themselves,
the referee gave them an early
Arbour Day present by awarding
them two penalty shots. They
scored on both attempts and the
home team was down by a pair.
For the rest of the game. St.
Columban pressed hard in an
attempt to tie the game. Along with
having some excellent scoring
chances, St. Columban took advan-
tage of the rainy weather and
gathered worms for the fishing
season. The big one got away on
this day and the final score was 3-1
for the bad guys.
The team would like to congratu-
late fellow player, Dean Martin,
who got married in the off season.
They would also like to congratu-
late Dave and Faye Murray who
saw the arrival of their first young-
ster. Keep up the good work, Dave,
and Faye another 10 more and we'll
have ourselves a farm team.
Miller hits two
doubles in win
Bobbi Miller scored two
doubles in Seaforth softball to
help Kids Klose defeat Coops
11-8. Other batters to offer
doubles for the victors were
Tracey Bedard, Carol Bennewies
and Mark Harris.
Coops' batting included a
triple by Rob Mason in the early
game.
In the late game Mark Harris
scored a home run as Custom
Arts defeated Whitney-Ribey 18-
8.
Katie O'Leary and Judy
Scarrow scored doubles while
Tracey Bedard notched a triple
for the winners. For Whitncy-
Ribey, Rob Mason scored a
home run and Joanne Heimpte
added a triple.
Seaforth boys contrib-
ute to national bronze
medal
Speaking of defensive skills Dan
Hoggart is to be highly commended
for his exceptional level of play.
Dan saw a minimum of 10-15
minutes every game and in most
cases was double and triple shifting
playing up to 25 minutes. He was
noticed early by Windsor and
appointed assistant captain.
Dan Hoggart and Kevin Van Den
Neucker were on the first line for
the All-Star Team mixed with
Windsor players. The line saw
power play action, penalty killing
action, along with regular shift
action. The second line had Matt
McNichol and Harold (The Wall)
Hugill on it. They too saw power
play, penalty killing and regular
shift action. Bradley Price was on
the third line and after taking a lot
of hits and bangs managed to do
the job and keep the opponents off
the scoreboard. The boys were
picked up by Windsor for a reason
and that rea§on didn't go unnoticed.
Ontario II had a total of 15 goals in
the tournament and Seaford' boys
were in on the action for 12 of
them. Dan Hoggart had 3 assists
along with Matt McNichol, Harold
Hugill had 2 assists and Kevin Van
Den Neucker had 2 goals and 2
assists.
The boyq will be returning to
Windsor in May for an Awards
Banquet and are wished the best of
luck in the future. Matt, Dan and
Kevin were at the First Nationals in
Montreal two years ago and were
honoured that their last year of
Junior they could come home with
a medal playing for a team that
recognized ,their talent. It won't be
the end of broomball however for
them. Dan > Hoggart plays for a team
in Ridgetown where he attends
school and plays for Winthrop of
the Seaforth League as well as Brad
Pryce. Mau McNichol plays for the
Grads, Kevin Van Den Neucker
plays for the Parr Line Panthers,
this year's "A" Runners up in the
Men's League and Harold Hugill
plays for the Knights. The five boys
represented the community well and
are to be commended.
