Local education awardsp resented
Local people who have contrib-
uted to excellence in education
received awards at the Goderich
Township Hall on April 27.
Award winners at the ninth annual
Excellence in Public Education
banquet included Hildebrand
Flowers, Kim Baan, Keri Bachert,
Robyn Carnochan, Kris
McNaughton, Karen Nigh, lain
Hastie and the late Bill Pinder.
The awards recognize students,
teachers, support staff, community
members and trustees who have
contributed to excellence in second-
ary schools in Huron County. The
banquet is sponsored by the Ontario
Secondary School Teachers' Feder-
ation (Huron County Branch) and
the Huron County Board of Educa-
tion.
John Lavis, the first Chair of the
Huron County Board of Education,
was honoured for his efforts and
organizational expertise in bringing
together the small local boards of
1968 to form the present Huron
County Board of Education.
For the first time ever awards
were presented to county winners of
the Marion Drysdale writing and art
contest. This year's theme was 'My
school...a good place to be.' Lisa
Cairncross and Krista Bierling won
awards for prose while Linda
Hollinger won for her school video.

Education awards for Seaforth District High School were (back row, left to right) Steve Hildebrand, of
Hildebrand Flowers; Kim Baan, Iain Hastie, Robyn Carnochan and (front row) Keri Bachert, Karen Nigh
and Kris McNaughton. The late Bill Pinder received the award posthumously.
Street lights costly
Erecting about 20 more street
lights in Harpurhey could be a
costly proposition for Harpurhey
residents, if they choose to petition
Tuckersmith council.
A petition of two thirds of resi-
dents and at least 50 per cent of the
tax assessment would be required to
establish more lights, Tuckersmith
Township Council was informed on
May 3.
The cost of the new lights would
be (for a property with a $94,000
assessment) $158 for the first year
and $17.58 per year afterwards.
Garden Club meeting held
Well, it's finally starting to look
like spring at Seaforth Manor
R, Seaforth Manor
Retirement Home. Most mornings a
robin's song can be heard in the air.
Residents have been enjoying short Retirement Home
walks outside or just sitting in the s,
sunshine. In the evenings residents `-
have enjoyed having the students in
from St. Michael's school in
Stratford.
For Easter, Seaforth Manor
Retirement Home had an Easter egg
guessing contest. The winners were
Mary McDougall and Lois Sloane.
Brunch was cooked by Cindy
DeGroof and her girls Marci and
Lori. After brunch Marci played
some songs on the piano. If anyone
knows someone with a similar
talent or has been on a trip and has
slides or speaks on a certain topic
please contact the retirement home
to arrange a date. Ruth Campbell
entertained residents with her piano
playing and singing.
Seaforth Manor Retirement Home
held its first garden club meeting
this month and planted wild flower
seeds and hcrb seeds. Club meet-
ings take place once per month.
On April 24 there was a surprise
party in honour of Mary
McDougall's birthday. Friends and
family gathered to wish her many
happy returns and enjoyed the
delicious cake.
On April 28 residents enjoyed the
singing of the South Huron gospel
singers. This group has been sing-
ing for the past 10 years and is
directed by Mr. Al De Haan.
The members, age 21-65, are
from the Exeter and Hensall area.
Up coming events: On June 21
there will be a display at the
Clinton Arena for the Community
lifestyle fair. Please visit between
