Eleanor Cook, an English Pro- fess )r at the University of Toronto, who has recently been awarded two fellowships worth approximately $100,000 to study the structure and function of riddles for two and a half years, has the answer. The Huron Expositor spoke to Cook recently while she was in Seaforth visiting family. (Answer: Man, who crawls on all fours as an infant, walks on two legs as an adult, then needs a cane for support in old age - from the story of Oedipus). Her research awards have received wide media coverage including a front page story in the April 29 edition of the Toronto Star. But before taxpayers start complaining about the way their money is being spent it should be clarified that both awards are from trust funds and not paid for by the citizens of Canada. She has received a six-month fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation in New York and a two-year Killam Trust Fellowship from the Canada Council. Both organizations award successful applicants annually with fellowships in various categories of the arts and sciences. For Cook, the award marks a 10 - year dream in the making. It was ten years ago the English professor wrote an essay on Northrop Frye's book Charms and Riddles. From DAVID soon PHOTO THE RIDDLER - University of Toronto English professor Eleanor Cook has been awarded two fellowships to study riddles and enigmas. She was recently in Seaforth visiting family. that point on she was hooked on riddles and enigmas. "The word 'read' and the word 'riddle' come from the same root," said Cook. "So all reading is a kind of solving of riddles." Why the fascination with riddles? "Riddles are very old. They are strange because they're both very small and very large. We say 'the riddle of the universe'- scientists will write about that. Also for cen- turies people have enjoyed the fun of them. That's why they're so intriguing to children," said Cook. She also thinks crossword puzzles are forms of riddles too. "You're not likely to encounter a 'neck riddle' where you answer a riddle or lose your life - like in Monty Python and the Holy Grail," Sites chosen after extensive crop lands are all on me a. million a that, Metzger said. A county press release says, "Stage 2C is a continuation of efforts to identify a County landfill site. One landfill site of approxi- mately 62 acres (including buffer areas) is necessary to manage the municipal solid waste produced in the County over a 40 year period. There is a list of 11 candidate landfill sites areas. The sites are not ranked at this time. They include: • Al - Ashfield part Lot 8, Con XIV Eastem Division • A3 - Ashfield Part Lot 4, Con. We're telling ourselves the stories of our own lives as we go along. We are acting them out so to speak. And there's things about those stories that we don't completely understand," said Cook. Riddles aren't unique to one culture. "They seem to be all over the world. There are Eastern ones. There's a great tradition of Jewish riddles," said Cook. Riddles also appear in the bible. What's the difference between riddles and enigmas? "Riddles usually refer to things which have answers. And enigmas are not always answerable." • Cook will begin the Guggenheim fellowship beginning ,in July when her sabbatical from the U. of T. begins. When the American fellow- ship is complete she will begin the Canada Council research. Upon the completion of the fellowships, Cook will write a book on riddles and enigmas divided into historical research and practical criticism. For Cook, it was the first time she'd applied for the Kilam Trust fellowship but she had applied to the Guggenheim in the past. "I'm very lucky," she said of her two awards. As well as the two fellowships, Cook was honoured with the Connaught award from the Univer- sity of Toronto for her research. • Eleanor Cook is an aunt of reporter David Scott. tests 22, 23 and 24, Con. Meetings have been scheduled for each of the groups of residents living on, or near an area identified as a candidate landfill site. "In addition, a formal public meeting will be held (in June) for the general public to review the work completed to date (including the Stage 2C Summary Report) and provide comments and ask ques- tions. The preferred site will be ident- ified in the Stage 3A report. For further information regarding the Huron County Waste Manage- ment Master Plan study please contact Craig Metzger.
