Absent from photo are Carrie Costello and Jen Heegy. 1994 SPORTS EDITION- PAGE 11 Area athletes excel in '93-'94 In May of 1993 two local women were honoured by the Federation of Broomball Associations of Ontario. Janet Buchanan was named one of the Central West Coaches of the Year for her work with the Parr Line Intermediate provincial gold medallist broomball team. Joan Hunking-Henderson, of Parr Line, was named Central West female player of the year. * * * On May 26 Monica Ryan and Mike Nolan were named female and male athletes of • the year at Seaforth District High School. * * * In June of 1993 a Seaforth lawn bowling rink headed to the provin- cial finals. The team was lead Neil Bell, second tom Philips, vice Fred Tilley and skip Lee Ryan. * * * Future National Hockey League prospect Mike Watt, from Egmondville, was named second in an OHL hockey draft in June of 1993 but he said he was opting to attend an American college. * * * Lori Perrie placed second in a Kitchener track and field meet discus competition in June of 1993. Carly Price won two hurdles events. * * * Egmondville native Mike Watt contributed to the performance of Canada's under -18 hockey team in Yokohama, Japan in August of 1993. * * * In March of '94 the Centenaires continued with their 'Cinderella' ways, following up a sweep of Exeter with a sweep of Lucan. * * * A Seaforth-based team of curlers headed to all -Ontario competition in Chesley at the end of March. The rink consisted of Gord Pryce, skip; Ron Pryce, vice; Brian McGavin, second and Jeff McGavin, lead. The team ended up third in Ontario. * * * Two hot hockey prospects, Seaforth's Mike and Boyd Devereaux, moved on from the Seaforth Junior . SEAFORTH 527-2909 Chris and Judy Lee, along with sons Brett and Mau, of Walton, hosted the Trans Can Moto Cross National Championships in the Walton area in August of 1993. * ** Seaforth's Tri -County Mites met Brussels in the 'A' championship in August 18, 1993. * * * Local equestrian Barbara Alkemade was part of the Canada East bronze medal team at the North American Endurance Cham- pionships near Calgary in July of 1993. The team won a bronze medal. * * * It was announced in August of 1993 that Seaforth would host the Junior Development League ban- quet for the first time. * * * In the fall of 1993 the highly - mobile National Hockey League player Dave McLlwain, a Seaforth native, was sent packing again. The former team member of teams such as Pittsburgh, Toronto and Winnipeg headed to the young Ottawa Senators organization. * * * Jack McLlwain and Ken Doig dropped the first puck at the open- ing game of the Seaforth Centenaires' 20th anniversary sea- son which began in 1993. * * * A Hensall girl realized a dream when she joined Team Ontario. Cara Gardner will be part of the line-up of Belle -age players with the team in the Canada Winter Games in Grand Prairie, Alberta in February, 1995. * * * The reunited championship Centenaires team of 1985-86 won an exhibition hockey match 8-7 against a multi-year Centenaires' 'Dream Team' in November of '93.
