HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1994-05-04, Page 66 -THE HURON EXPOSITOR, May 4, 1094 Children visit maple syrup operation The month of March ended with an interesting trip to Barb and Ray Storey's sugar bush by the Seaforth Cooperative Children's Centre. Barb explained to the children how the trees were tapped, how the lines were attached to the trees with spials and also how the sap ended up in the container in the chip wagon. The children watched with wide eyes as the wood stove was stoked to help boil the sap to tum it into syrup. The main theme for the month of April at the Seaforth Cooperative Children's Centre was 'The Farm'. Thanks go to some mothers who had some new farm animal puppets at the puppet theatre. The Residents of Seaforth Manor Nursing Home really seemed to enjoy the farm animal parade and songs by the children. On Thursday, April 21 the morn- ing class took a walk to Nobel's nursery to purchase a red maple tree to plant for Earth Day. On Friday, April 22 (Earth Day) the morning class worked to get the tree planted. The centre welcomes to its pro- grams Nicole and Derek Wylie (Tues. p.m.); Brittany Williams (after school) and Carolyn Murray (Wed. a.m.) Happy Birthdays in the month of April are wished to Jessica Henderson, Jason Wilson, Kendra Falconer, Greg Murray, Janelle Murray, Katie Lang and Kevin Verbeme. May is here and the classrooms will be busy centred around the themes 'Wild, Wild West' and 'Marine Life'. rf A new die' : spirit of giving A nanonal Program to encourage giving and voluntrcnng 744444 T.V. "I don't think there are as many changes as last time." A similar search was conducted at GDCI almost four years ago to the day. At that time police seized marijuana and hashish with a street value of about $500, as well as other drug paraphernalia. "There's a lot of drug use around," Phillips said. "Acid (LSD) is because it's cheap, ibaking a big comeback, and marijuana and hashish are still very prevalent." The increase in drug use is being matched by an upswing in thefts, break-ins and violent crime, he added. "Few people that I know steal because of the ecomony," Phillips said. "Between 70 and 80 per cent of all thefts are related to money for drugs - and Huron County is not far off the average."
