Disco11 praises local league

Referees and linesmen may seem
humourless during hockey
games...but Scott Driscoll proves
they know how to have a good
laugh.
In fact, the Seaforth native and
second -year National Hockey
League linesman was even the butt
of one of their jokes.
The practical joke took place at
the very first NHL game he helped
officiate. When he skated onto the
ice he was a bundle of nerves. He
was surprised when he was greeted
by coaches and fans by his nick-
name, 'Cub.' Little did he know his
prankster officiating colleagues had
taped the word 'Cub' to the back of
his shirt.
Driscoll proved he could not only
take a joke but dish out a few too
as guest speaker at the Junior 'D'
banquet held in Seaforth on Satur-
day.
One of his jokes was at the
expense of Mitchell Hawks' left
winger Kory Dietz. Driscoll recalled
that he was once referee for Dietz
when he played minor hockey.
The hulking, six -foot -four lines-
man is sitting out during the NHL
playoffs as the veterans are
assigned to the big games. Driscoll
joked that the Ottawa Senators (the
losing team which is home to
Scou's former neighbour Dave
McLlwain) would make the
playoffs by the time he helps offici-
ate a playoff game.
The towering official with the
Hollywood good looks had praise
for the Junior Development league,
home of the Seaforth Centenaires.
He called it an extension of an
excellent minor hockey system
providing opportunities for players
in the Seaforth and Mitchell areas.
"It enables the players to continue
on playing competitive hockey," he
said. "I'm glad to hear Junior
Development is still going on
strong."
A veteran of junior 'D' and :B'
hockey teams in Seaforth and St.
Marys, Driscoll said the league
gave players a chance to make new

opportunity to learn teamwork and
cooperation which is essential in the
work world, he said.
The featured speaker first started
officiating hockey games at the age
of 13. A shot at an NHL playing
career was hurt, he said, because it
was perceived he wasn't "tough
enough." Driscoll loves his current
job, however.
"It's not as glamorous as being a
player but you have the excitement
of the big games to do," he said.
The second -year linesman said the
officials are like "brothers" to him.
"We all care for each other like
family."
' Driscoll, who trained as a teacher, ,
lives in Guelph with his wife Col-
leen (when he is not flying from
city to city for each game). He
joked that NHL for him stands for
'No Home Life.'
His light-hearted talk to the crowd
had plenty of encouragement and
lots of laughs. One of the only
barbs he had was for the 'suits'
who occupy the best seats in an
arena. The linesman said he hates
to see the most loyal fans denied
the best seats.
Driscoll, who has helped officiate
many of the expansion teams, is
enthusiastic about hockey in expan-
sion -team cities where the sport
"has caught on like wild -fire."
All-stars at Saturday's banquet
included Seaforth Centenaires
goaltender Dana Duskocy and
defenceman Karsten Carroll.
One of the commentators said of
Duskocy that "it won my heart"
when he faced 98 shots in a four -
overtime epic against Mitchell, only
to see the Hawks win the game 2-1.
"It was one of the greatest nights
that I ever saw."
