Seaforth students on exchange

Free trade has begun in Seaforth
with the exchange of a dozen Cana-
dian and American students.
Six Seaforth District High School
students are spending a week in
Carlinville, Illinois after six
Carlinville high school students
finished spending a week living
with Seaforth students and attending
high school here.
The American students, who
ranged from grade nine to twelve,
had to continue with their studies
while visiting Seaforth.
For some, Seaforth wasn't too
much different from their
hometown of 5,400. "It looks a lot
like Carlinville but we thought
there'd be snow," said Jennifer
Mara, who was staying with
Seaforth student Lorianne McClure.
The Carlinville high school is a
little larger than Seaforth. About
560 students attend.
As far as industry, "farming and
coal mining" were mentioned as
two big employers of Carlinville
residents.
The group of 12 Seaforth and
Carlinville students travelled to
Toronto, London and Stratford to
check out tourist attractions includ-
ing the CN Tower, a Blue Jays
game at Skydome, the Science
Centre and a Junior 'B' hockey
game featuring Waterloo and St.
Catharines.
As well, the visitors toured his-
torical Seaforth attractions including
the Cardno Opera Hall. The town
•
also donated a copy of the
"Seaforth Game" to each Carlinville
student. For most of the Illinois
students this was their first trip to
southern Ontario. (All six of the
Seaforth high school students have
previously visited the United
States).
Carlinville is located about six
hours from Chicago, Illinois. Did
anyone think the Blackhawks would
beat the Maple Leafs in the
playoffs? One lone Carlinville soul
picked Chicago to win - Tim Link
(No relation to Mau Link who was
also visiting from Carlinville).
Any other differences between
Seaforth and Carlinville?
"Youse guys talk different, eh,"
said Matt Link.
