provincial ringette competition
The Seaforth Sizzlers recently
played solid ringette at the
provincial championships in
Hamilton, opening competition with
a game against Oshawa, who later
advanced to the championship
game.
Seaforth had twice tied the game
before Oshawa responded with two
more and then Jessica Finlayson,
earning the hat -trick, netted a pass
from Lori McKay and Kim
Devereaux to move Seaforth within
one. Seaforth pulled goalie Sarah
Agar but Oshawa put one in the
empty net and the Sizzlers lost 6-4.
The second game against West
Ferris (North Bay) was more to the
Sizzlers' liking. Jenny DelVecchio
opened the scoring on a pass from.
Jessica. Marsha Denys, assisted by
Jeanette Crowley, put Seaforth
ahead by two but West Ferris
responded with a goal. Kim
Devereaux re -captured the two -goal
lead netting a Jessica Finlayson
deflection and Marsha Denys
increased it to three when checking
by Katie Holland and Jenny, and
Marsha's patience in front of the
net paid off. West Ferris scored
their last goal of the game just
before Kim scored her second,
assisted by Ally Devereaux.
Jeanette finished off a play set up
by Kim and Jessie by firing the ring
into the net. The final score 6-2 for
Seaforth.
In game three Hamilton and
Seaforth had matching records of 1
and 1. Hamilton scored first but
Kim, from Jessie, tied the game
ending the period. Seaforth took the
lead when Jessica scored, unas-
sisted. Hamilton tied the game and
with two minutes remaining went
ahead by one. Seaforth called goalie
Sarah to the bench and put out the
extra attacker but with 40 seconds
on the clock Hamilton scored in the
empty net. Seaforth took the free
pass from centre ice, worked the
ring into the. Hamilton end and
Jenny scored with .09 seconds on
the clock but Hamilton had a 4-3
victory.
With their chances of a medal
slipping away, the Sizzlers played
Upper Ottawa, a team with only
one loss. Upper Ottawa had a four -
goal lead with 1:08 left on the
clock when Becky deVries, assisted
by Marsha and Melissa, scored for
Seaforth. With super checking and
some good saves by Sarah, Seaforth
shut -out Upper Ottawa in the sec-
ond half. Jenny DeVecchio netted a
pass from Becky and Katie early in
the second and then fired in
another, assisted by Marsha, with
only 34 seconds left to narrow
Upper Ottawa's lead to one but
time ran out and the Sizzlers had
their third loss, 4-3 to Upper
Ottawa. It was not a happy dressing
room after this game; their dream
of a provincial medal was gone.
However, the tournament wasn't
over yet.
Game five against undefeated
Thunder Bay was the kind of
ringette game written up in books.
Maybe it was the pep talk about
"playing 500", the presence of so
many fans or that all the pressure
was gone; most likely it was that
these are 11 terrific girls who ref-
used to quit. These eleven put on a
show few will forget. The referees'
room buzzed all day about this
game.
The Sizzlers had control of the
ring 95 percent of the time, but the
Thunder Bay goalie was phenom-
enal, stopping close to forty shots.
After 11 minutes of scoreless play
a fluke shot from behind the net
caught the back of Sarah's leg and
bounced into the net. However, the
Sizzlers were NOT going to lose
another one! Early in the second
Jenny, assisted by Lori and Jessie,
found a hole and tied the game.
Another 13 minutes of scoreless
play followed before the buzzer
sounded and the game went into
sudden 'victory' overtime. With two
minutes remaining in the first over-
time period, Melissa snagged the
ring off the boards, passed to Lori
who saw Kim in the open and a
hard Kim Devereaux wrist shot
bulged the back of the net. The
girls went wild! It was strongly felt
OW Thunder Bay was going to win
this championship and they had just
handed them their first and, poss-
ibly, only defeat.
In the final game against
Markham, fourth place was on the
line. The Sizzlers soon had a three
goal lead. Kim netted two, the first
from Jessie and the second from
Jessie and Lori, and Becky deVries
scored the third, assisted by Marsha
and Jenny. Markham tallied one in
the first but Jessie scored on a pass
from Kim to regain the three -goal
lead. Markham was, of course, their
Regional champ and they weren't
about to give up on fourth place
either. They scored early in the
s*ond but Seaforth responded
when Jenny scored on passes from
Becky and Marsha. Markham
scored again, and again the Sizzlers
reisponded with Kim earning a hat -
trick on a pass from Jessie. Marsha
deked the goalie on a pass from
Melissa and with 7 minutes remain-
ing, the Sizzlers held a 7-3 lead.
But then Markham started to bear
down and the fast pace of the
morning game started to catch up to
Seaforth. Markham scored three
unanswered goals, the last with two
minutes remaining and the coaches
and fans feared it might get away
from them. The Sizzlers, however,
held on to earn a 7-6 victory and to
achieve their mid -tournament goal
of winning half their games.

A special committee of the
Seaforth and District Community
Centres board will investigate
the matter of Junior 'D' ice
rental for the Seaforth
Centenaire's 1994-95 season.
A delegation from the Junior
'D' Hockey Executive presented
their case for lowered ice rental
fees compared with other area
junior hockey clubs at the arena
board's February meeting.
Board member Jim Ryan, rep-
resenting McKillop Township,
stated that a number of players
on the Jr. 'D' team are from
outside of the Seaforth area
(beyond the five member
municipality's borders) and that
he would find it hard to justify
giving them a subsidized rate,
according to the arena board's
March minutes.
A special committee consisting
of Rob McLeod, Ron Murray,
Ken Flannagan and Rudy Jansen
was established to look into the
matter further.
