Involve your children in making your home safe

into your home unnoticed when
shrubbery conceals entry points.
Consider The Criminal Mind:
Take a good look around for
areas that may be an easy target
for a break-in.
Add locks, window bars and
nails to reinforce any vulnerable
areas.
Leave No Window of
Opportunity: Make certain all
screens and storm windows lock
from the inside.
Consider A Security System:
You may want to consider
installing one as an added safety
measure. Some home systems
provide fire and medical alert
features in addition to
safeguarding against break-ins.
Let There Be Light: Check
that all outside lights are
working. Install additional
fixtures to ensure that your
home is adequately lit on all four
sides. Consider installing timers
with a photoelectric eye on lights
in several rooms to give the
impression someone is home.
Lock It Up: Measure to see if
windows are located within 40
inches of any door. If so, secure
the door with a double cylinder
dead -bolt lock.
If your door doesn't have a
window, a wide-angle peep hole
or intercom should be installed.
Engage Your Child: Remind
children to keep doors closed
and locked at all times, especially
the garage door. If you have a
home security system, teach
your children how to use it.
Behind Closed Doors: Teach
children never to open the door
to strangers, even when an adult
is home. Jf your children's
friends often come to play, teach
them a secret doorbell ring or
knock to announce their visit.
Check your automatic garage doorl
To make sure your automatic
garage door system works
properly and safely, there are
two steps you can take:
Step One is a simple monthly
inspection you can conduct
yourself to test the opener's
automatic reverse feature and to
be sure the door is properly
balanced.
Step Two in maintaining a
safe garage door system is a
thorough safety inspection of the
entire system, which should be
performed annually by a
professional.
A garage door can weigh
hundreds of pounds and, if not
properly maintained or
operated, can cause injury or
damage to property.
Protect your children from carbon monoxide
Don't take your furnace for
granted.
Check home furnaces
regularly for potential carbon
monoxide leaks.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is the
number one cause of poisoning
deaths in America and children
are even more susceptible to this
deadly poison than adults.
This is due to children' aster
metabolic rates and grea r
activity levels.
Fortunately, early warning of a
potential CO hazard is possible
with carbon monoxide detectors.
The Consumer Product Safety
Commission recommends you
have at least one detector at
home, located in the sleeping
area.
In addition to the furnace,
other potential carbon monoxide
sources include: chimney pipes
or flue, clogged or blocked
chimney openings, water
heaters, gas refrigerators and
clothes dryers and portable
heaters, fireplaces, woodburning
stoves and charcoal grills.
Remember, regular
maintenance of furnaces and
appliances can help eliminate
the potential causes of this
invisible, deadly poison.
Consumers show how to weather the elements inside the house
Consumers have discovered
that the best protection you can
find for your home is in the
garage.
Users of water-based rubber
and vinyl protectants claim that
such products aid around the
house in many nontraditional
uses.

Best known for guarding
against cracking in rubber, vinyl
and plastic automotive surfaces,
protectants are a strong ally in
weathering the elements inside
the house as well.
Consumers' ideas include:
• Patio furniture: Surface
protection on patio furniture will
help keep it looking good.
• Cabinets: Apply protectant to
cabinets to renew gloss and
sheen.
• Sporting equipment: Vinyl
bags and casings, such as golf
bags and musical instrument
cases, show and look better with
use of protectant.
It can also help to keep the
shaft of your clubs looking
scratch -free.
• Children's toys: Use on plastic
toys helps keep colors vibrant.
• Beach supplies: Sand pails,
water coolers and inflatable rafts
will all benefit from a coat of
protectant prior to the hot
summer months.
• Handy work helper: Use a
protectant to lubricate the screw
before driving it into a hard
wood surface.
• Scuba gear: Applying a water-
based protectant to mask, fin,
snorkel and other equipment
before storage helps to guard
against deterioration from
season to season.
• Fishing line: A coat of
protectant on your rod and
fishing line allows for easy
removal of fish scales and helps
to extend the life of the
equipment.
Just use a little resourcefulness
