Strong, reliable doorlocks are essential to any effective home security program. For entryways, select doorlocks with ball-bearing locking systems, because they offer greater resistance to prying and twisting. For a higher level of security, keyed doorlocks should always be accompanied by quality deadbolts. When selecting a deadbolt lock, make sure it has a massive interlocking chassis to protect the latch and help prevent break- ins. Also, look for a full 1 -inch bolt and reinforced strike plate with extra -long mounting screws for added strength. Outdoor valuables Property left unprotected in your yard provides an easy target. Your best defense is to store these movable items in a secured shed or garage. Be sure to lock them to a stationary point in the shed or garage. If you must leave valuable possessions, such as barbecue grills, outside, hide them with a tarp and secure them to a fence post, railing or other stationary point with quality padlocks. For a high level of security, select laminated steel padlocks with pin -tumbler locking mechanisms (they are highly resistant to pounding, twisting and prying), or padlocks with "hardened" shackles (loops) to resist cutting. Aeration is beneficial for your lawn in a number of ways? Aeration will overcome a compacted soil. Compacted soils make it difficult for roots to grow, limiting the movement of air, moisture and fertilizer through the soil. It can also reduce your water requirements by relieving soil com- paction. Water penetration is increased and water run-off is reduced. If your lawn has a thick layer of thatch, aeration will push through that layer and improve air, water and nutrient penetration. This will enhance the development of a deep root system. A deeply rooted lawn will be healthier and better able to withstand drought, disease and insect stress. This process should be considered spring and fall. Next Week: Overseeding See thls space each week for a valuable Weed Man Turf Tip.
