Don't forgef front and back door screens
From pap 16
Staple or tack the new
screening to one end of the
frame and place the frame on
the workbench with 2" x 4"
wood blocks under each end.
Fasten the C-clamp along each
side of the screen to bow the
frame, then pull the screening
taut and tack down the second
end.
After the ends are secured,
remove the clamps and blocks
and use new spline and the
concave roller to fasten the
screen.
1f the screen has a center rail,
put it back on, then just trim off
the excess screening and replace
the decorative molding.
1f you find that the wooden
frames are weakening with age,
a little preventive repair can help
stretch their life.
To straighten and stiffen
weakened corners, try screwing
L-shaped metal braces on each
side of the frame. If either wood
or metal screens are bent out of
shape, though, the best bet is to
buy or build new frames.
Full benefit .
When checking window
screens, be sure not to overlook
front and back door screens.
And, of course, homeowners
with sliding screen doors should
pay extra attention to the door
tracks.
steady for a change of scene?
With the arrival of spring,
chances are you're ready for a
major change of scene in your
living room.
Redecorating fever seems to
go hand-in-hand with the time
honored tradition of spring
housecleaning.
And once you have that
craving for a fresh, new look
there's no satisfaction until the
redecorating job is done.
You've probably already
pinpointed some existing
furnishings you'd like to replace,
but step back and take another
long, ruthless look.
Are there other shabby pieces
you need to replace? Have some
worn unstylish items become
eyesores, even though they may
hold special memories.
Be honest with yourself and
throw out the things that can't
be spruced up to your
satisfaction — they'll just look
worse as you improve your
environment.
A' few hours spent looking
--through-decoratitg magazines
and a trip or two to home
furnishings stores will give you
an idea of the new styles,
designs and colors that you can
introduce into your home to
create an exciting new look.
Here are a few ideas you may
want to incorporate in
freshening up your living room.
O Drape a crisp white or creme
neo-classical swag over a
handsome rod, leaving the
windows bare. For more privacy,
add sheer or semi -transparent
curtains.
o Brighten up'private
conversation by facing a group
of two or more chairs toward a
sunny window.
o Replace a heavy area mg with
summery sisal — or leave
wooden floors bare to make the
room seem larger.
o Free up the floor and create an
illusion of extra space by
choosing vertically oriented
CD storage towers.
o Bring nature indoors with
planters full of colorful spring
flowers — crocuses, irises,
daffodils or tulips.
Repaint the walls in a cool
white or soothing creme, and
add splashes of color via
accessories and brightly painted
trim.
o Add fresh textural interest by
accessorizing with a mixture of
rough baskets and smooth
glazed pottery.
o Exchange yellowed lamp
shades for crisply pleated new
ones.
v Focus on furniture with clean
straight lines and light finishes,
choosing upholstered pieces in
cool canvas, linen and cotton.
o Minimize clutter with furniture
that has storage capabilities,
such as home entertainment
centers for your television, VCR,
CD player and accessories or a
chest that doubles as a coffee
table.
Don't overlook your windows
A trick of the trade known to
all interior designers is that the
addition of luxurious looking
window treatments can create a
sense of elegance in even the
simplest room decor.
The full folds of curtains and
draperies not only soften the
hard edges of windows, walls
and furniture, they can
transform the total effect.
Correlated table -top
accessories and chair pads give
the room a finished "decorator"
look.
Any kinks in the bottom track
should be straightened to help
the doors roll smoothly.
Ventilating your home
naturally by making full use of
window and door screens
improves air circulation, making
the home more cdmfortabte and
reducing electric bills for
homeowners with air
conditioning.
You can buy standard -mesh
aluminum or fiberglass screening
at hardware stores and home
supply centers, along with
replacement spline and hand
rollers.
Rolls of screening are
generally available in widths up
to 84 -inch and often can be cut
to order, so be. sure to have the
measurements of the screens
you need to replace.
Many rescreening packages
are offered with easy do-it-
yourself instructions.
If you are still not convinced
it's easy to replace old screens,
you can call a local screening
dealer for installation service.
They are usually listed in the
Yellow Pages under 'Screens —
Door and Window' and can meet
all your home screening needs.
