Volunteers fi
BY TIM CUMMING

If you live on planet earth you
have probably seen the effects of
the disease we call cancer.
"There aren't many families that
cancer hasn't touched," said Thelma
Bode, President of the Seaforth
Branch of the Canadian Cancer
Society.
For the fust time the Cancer
Society will carry out its entire
fundraising campaign in Seaforth
with a one-night 'cancer blitz.' The
door-to-door fundraising evening
takes place on Monday, April 18
from 6.9.
The local branch hopes to raise
up to $31,500 with its fundraising
drive.
Volunteers will meet at Northside
United Church. There are already
about 25 volunteers signed up to
take part in the one -evening blitz
but more volunteers are needed. If
you are interested in supporting the
fight against cancer call Loreen
Dale at 527-0510 or arrive at the
Northside United Church on April
18. Refreshments will be served to
volunteers after the one-night blitz.
Each volunteer who comes helps
make the workload lighter for the
other volunteers.
If you aren't home the evening of
April 18 an envelope will be left at
your door asking for a donation. A
mail -out campaign will take place
in the rural areas.
Some residents might think all
donations leave the area. This isn't
so, said Bode.
"Half of what is collected from
the campaign stays in Huron
County," she said. "The other half
goes to research."
Half of the donations support
research while the other half goes
to such work as helping people with
medical supplies. Financially -
assisted services include
homemaking, drugs, dietary supple-
ments and rental of medical equip-
ment

and Thelma Bode, Seaforth branch
president.
Two years ago the Cancer Society
held a longer door-to-door cam-
paign and last year sent a mail -out
for donations. The resppj ,to the
mail campaign was 'disappointing
and the Cancer Society hopes this
year's one -night -blitz will be suc-
cessful.
The event coincides with 'Nation-
al Volunteer Week' across Canada,
which runs from April 17-23.
The executive of the Seaforth
branch is Thelma Bode, President;
Loreen and Alf Dale, Vice -Presi-
dents; Kathleen Cuthill, Secretary;
Pat Troutbeck, Treasurer, Jean
Ross, Daffodils and Rural Mail -
Outs; Alice Reid, Patient Service
and Transportation; Marian
McLean, Communication and Alf
Ross, Huron County President.
The Huron Unit is part of South-
western Region which has its head
office in London. Huron Unit's
office is located in Clinton and is
staffed by a paid half-time secre-
tary, Laura Hoggart, 9 a.m. to 1
p.m. daily.
The Cancer Society is funded by
public donations that come from the
house-to-house campaign in April
each year and from memorial dona-
tion bequests as well as the daffodil
sales. The Society receives no gov-
ernment funds.
"Volunteers are the heart of the
Cancer Society, who give freely of
their time to help eradicate cancer,"
according to a press release from
the Seaforth branch.
According to its mission state-
ment the Canadian Cancer Society
is a "national community-based
organization of volunteers, whose
mission is the eradication of cancer
and enhancement of the quality of
life of people living with cancer."
