Sizzlers off to
provincials
Undefeated this season in Huron -
Perth league play, Seaforth's "A" -
rated Sizzlers ringette team heads to
the Provincial Championships in
April to represent the Seaforth
Ringette Association, the Huron -
Perth League and Western Region.
In Minor Hockey, the level of
play is determined by population -
teams play against teams from
towns of the same size. In ringette,
population has nothing to do with
the level at which teams play. A
team's success in previous years
and its record in the opening
months of the current season deter-
mine the level at which the team
will compete.
Most of the members of the
Seaforth Sizzlers played last year
for the Mighty Ducks who won the
Regional Petite Championship at
the "C" level. This year the
Sizzlers, all 11 and 12 years of age,
are playing Provincial Petite "A",
the second highest level of Ringette
play in Canada, one below "AA"
play.
Playing for the Seaforth Sizzlers
are goalie Sarah Agar, who has
earned eight shut -outs this year,
Jeanette Crowley, Jenny
DelVecchio, Marsha Denys, Ally
Devereaux, Kim Devereaux, Becky
deVries, Jessica Finlayson, Katie
Holland, Lori McKay and Melissa
VanBalcel. The team is coached by
Joanne Holland, Brad Finlayson and
Jan DelVecchio and managed by
Deb Denys.
To date, including exhibition and
league games, invitational tourna-
ments and play-off tournaments, the
Sizzlers have played 43 games and
have a record of 35 wins, three ties
and five losses. Only one of these
losses was against a team rated at
"A" level play.
The Sizzlers were undefeated this
season in Huron -Perth League play
and, if all games against Huron -
Perth teams are totalled, they
outscored their opponents 180-30.
They recently won the Huron -Perth
"A" Championships.
During the season the Sizzlers
also played eight games against
"AA" rated teams. They won one
game against Waterloo "AA", split
a pair and tied one with London,
the 1994 "AA" bronze medalists,
and lost three and tied one against
Cambridge, the 1994 "AA" gold
medalists.
The Sizzlers entered two
invitational tournaments this year.
In November they won the Cham-
pionship in the Exeter, Petite "A"
Tournament by winning all their
games. In February the Sizzlers
earned the silver medal in the
Seaforth Petite "AA" Tournament,
losing the championship game to a
higher -calibre London team.
The last weekend in February the
Sizzlers competed in the Western
Region Championship Tournament.
During round-robin play they
experienced their only loss of the
season, to date, by an "A" team but
Seaforth defeated that same team 8-
4 in the final game. The victory
earned them the right to represent
the Seaforth Ringeue Association,
the Huron -Perth League and West-
ern Region at the Provincial Cham-
pionships in Hamilton on April 6-
10.
Ontario is divided into six
Regions that each sends a represen-
tative to the Provincial Champion-
ships. The hosts, this year,
Hamilton, may also enter a team in
each age group. These seven teams
take part in a six -team round-robin
tournament with each team playing
two games per day during the first
three days of the tournament.
At the conclusion of each game,
the coaches rate their opposition for
sportsmanship and fair -play and at
the end of the tournament an award
is presented to the team that scores
highest.
During the month of March the
Sizzlers have been busy fund-rais-
ing for the Provincial Tournament
entry fee and for their five-day stay
in Hamilton. The players and their
families appreciate the support of
the Royal Canadian Legion, the
Seaforth Ringette Association,
Scaforth Minor Hockey and the
community of Scaforth in their
fund-raising efforts.
Chevies win as
season ends
March 25 saw the end of Senior
Bowling for this season. The
Chevies managed to edge the Fords
for top place. Ron Bennett's
231,224 and 647 triple almost kept
the Fords in first place but the
Chevies were too hungry.
There wcrc only three points
separating thc four remaining
teams, with thc Olds being low.
John Van Loon's 209, Campbell
Wcy's 208 and Fred Munning's 205
were the only other 200 scores.
A more detailed report will follow
the banquet on April 5 at 6:30 p.m.
Attention: There will be Senior
Bowling on Friday, April 8. Every-
one is welcome to participate and a
team will be chosen to take part in
the Senior Games.
