'Cinderella' team loses series
continued from page eight
The 'Cinderella' Centenaires were
badly outshot, 214-105, and only
scored four goals the entire series,
which was what beat them as much
as anything at the end. Their well -
disciplined defensive style was
good enough to upset third-place
Exeter then second -place Lucan to
get them to their first division fugal
since 1985-86, but it wasn't good
enough to dethrone the Hawks who
also have an excellent defensive
dub.
Centenaires general manager
Gregor Campbell says he now
regrets scheduling back -to -back-to-
back games because injuries also
took their tool when two front-line
players, Scott Wright with a badly
bruised shoulder and Don Rivers
with muscle spasms in his back,
were forced out of the Centenaires'
lineup within five minutes of each
other early in the second period
with Mitchell up a game and the
score tied 0-0 Thursday night. so
Seaforth, never known for its
"firewagon" offence anyway, had a
short bench for what ended up
being a 5-1 loss in that game two at
Seaforth Thursday, and had only 14
skaters available for a 4-0 defeat in
game three at Mitchell Friday.
Campbell said his mistake forced
his coaches into even more of a
kitty -bar -the -door style and helped
put his team on the ropes.
The Centenaires also dodged a
big bullet early in Saturday night's
marathon that ended it when
defenceman Trevor Smith just
missed getting a major artery and
his jugular sliced by a skate. Local
ambulance attendant "Cub" Betties
said it was the best example he had
every seen of why all hockey
players should always wear neck
protectors. Smith refused to go to
the hospital and finished the game,
Cents' veterans Paul McElwain and Karsten Carroll played their
last game in Junior Development league.
also picking up a big black eye in
the process.
The numbing but courageous end
of this season also marked the last
game in Centenaire colours for
veterans Paul McLlwain and
Karsten Carroll, who are now
overage and ineligible for junior
hockey. "Mac" and Ted Sills, who
was always flying and arguably
Seaforth's most effective forward in
the playoffs, shared the team lead
in playoff scoring both with 14
points. Paul had nine goals and five
assists and Ted notched four goals
and 10 assists. Up-and-comer Steve
McInally was next with five goals
and three assists, followed by Andy
Scott with six goals and Karsten
with one goal and five assists.
This 20th anniversary season
lasted seven and half months on the
ice for the Centenaires but isn't
quite over yet off it. Seaforth hosts
the OHA Junior Development
League's Annual Awards Banquet
on Saturday, April 23, with former
Centenaire and now NHL official
Scou Driscoll at the head table and
giving the keynote speech.

Is that game
still on?
Just how long was Saturday
night's record -length game
between the Seaforth Centenaires
and Mitchell? Just ask Heather
McMillan.
The Seaforth arena employee
had left the arena shortly before
the quadruple -overtime match
ended at 1:37 a.m. on Sunday
morning. She returned at about
8:00 a.m. and received a call
from a Centenaires spectator.
The gentleman on the phone
had apparently left before the
end of the series -ending game
and, recognizing Heather's
voice, presumed she had been at
the arena all night.
"Is that game still on?" he
asked her.
The game may not have lasted
all night but it did set a record
for longest game in the entire
OHL this season.
Seaforth native Dave
McLlwain assisted on the win-
ning goal in an amazing home -
ice win for the Ottawa Senators
over the mighty Detroit Red
Wings on Wednesday night.
Wed. Mar. 23
Dave assisted on the Senators'
fifth goal in a 5-4 win in Ottawa
against the NHL's highest scor-
ing team, the Detroit Red Wings.
Thurs. Mar. 24
Dave didn't manage any points
in a 5-1 road game loss to the
Pittsburgh Penguins.
Mon. Mar. 28
'Mac' had one assist in a 3-2
road game loss against the
Montreal Canadiens. One of
Dave's goals in the game was
disallowed after review.
Totals
Dave now has 15 goals and 22
assists in 58 games with the
Ottawa Senators for a total of 37
points.

11SPR1NGT AWWCARE"
Early Spring lawns can appear straw-coloured and dead. If the grass
seems very dense and matted, you can help by giving the lawn a good,
vigorous raking. Remove the piles of material and add them up to your
compost pile. This raking opens up the turn to allow light, water and fer-
tilizer penetration. It stimulates the grass plant and makes the lawn look
much better.
If your lawn is very sparse and you have had serious problems with
crabgrass in precious years, you may wish to apply a crabgrass control.
This material must be applied very early in the spring because it stops
the crabgrass roots as they begin to grown. After a crabgrass control
has been applied, the soil surface should not be disturbed in any way.
Raking or digging will destroy the effectiveness of the crabgrass control
material.
