Cents lose epic hocke
Nobody can say the Seaforth
Centenaires didn't go down withou
a fight.
The final game in the series w
the longest game in the Ontari
Hockey Association's various level
and leagues this season.
Led by veteran Dana Dufkocy
whose gritty heroics have to be
rated as one of the greatest per-
formances ever seen by any
goaltender at a Seaforth arena, the
Cents lasted until 9:20 of the fourth
overtime in the wee hours of Sun-
day morning. That's when Rob
Boville's goal on Mitchell's 98th
shot lifted the defending champion
Hawks to a 2-1 knockout and four -
game sweep of the Western Divi-
sion final in the OHA's Junior
Development League.
The Hawks go on to meet the
Eastern Division champ, either Port
Stanley or Thamesford, for this
year's OHA title.
The Centenaires are done for
1993-94. But they can remember
their run to the "final four" in their
20th anniversary season and its
fantastic final stand with pride.
You can keep your new fangted
shootouts. This was an old
fashioned skate 'till you drop finish
with players on both teams literally
staggering, like exhausted knuckle -
boxers who refuses to go down, as
they left the ice late in the game
between overtimes. The classic
confrontation lasted five hours and
was 40 seconds shy of amounting
to two complete games. It was
played in front of a full house, for
most of the time, and officially
ended at 1:37 Sunday morning. It
was the fust time any Centenaire
coach or player could ever remem-
ber participating in a game that
went into four overtimes at any
level of that sport.
OHA referee's co-ordinator
Charlie Lennox confirmed Monday
morning it was the longest and the
only "fourth -overtime game" the
association has on record this sea-
son and it's only had a couple of
three -period overtime games, one of
which involved the Centenaires too.
They beat Exeter in that one.
Duskocy was at times simply
unbelievable in the Seaforth net
Saturday and Sunday. The 19 -year-
old veteran goalie from Stratford
led the league with four shutouts
during the regular season, was the
Cents' playoff MVP last year and
its regular season MVP three years
ago. He started every playoff game
for Seaforth this year and ended up
with a 2.14 goals against average.
And he just wouldn't give up the
ghost in this one. He saw a
truckload of rubber and was par-
ticularly brilliant in the overtime
when most of the Mitchell shots
were well -aimed and through traf-
fic. Darcy Ballantyne was no slouch
for Mitchell at the other end of the

rink either, but only faced 50 shots,
a relative walk in the park on this
spring morning.
Ryan Kipfer opened the scoring
for the Hawks at 6:59 of the first
period but Paul McLlwain replied
for the Centenaires slightly more
than three minutes later, assisted by
Ted Sills and Steve McInally.
That's the way the score stood for
the next five and half periods. The
Hawks thought they had it won
twice in the overtime and swarmed
onto the ice to congratulate each
other, but referee Dave Whaley
waved them off and the Seaforth
defence threw the brooms back into
the stands. The Centenaires were
still skating with the Hawks and
Seaforth in tight race
with Aylmer Midgets
After two games with Aylmer in
the OMHA Finals, the Seaforth
Midgets were tied with their
opponents at one game apiece and
played another game Tuesday
(Results unavailable at press time).
The Midgets were snubbed in the
first garne of the series but evened
the series two days later on the
road.
AYLMER 6, SEAFORTH 4
Right from the start I was obvious
things were not going Seaforth's
way on Friday night. With an early
goal disallowed, the Midgets
seemed to be constantly on their
heels. At 6:51 Aylmer scored.
Thenk with only 52 seconds
remaining in the period they added
another. With 3:13 left in the
second period Aylmer made the
score 3-0 and Seaforth began to feel
the heat. Trying valliantly to score
before the period was out, Seaforth
got on the board at 1:20 on a
deflection by Jason Murray off a
Jeff Flanagan shot.
For a while, the third period
appearad to be all Seaforth. At
10:55 Steve Mclnally scored to pull
Seaforth within one. Just two
minutes later Brent Hulley decided
Seaforth needed a goal buried by
tying goal. Aylmer again seized the
lead on a powerplay but Jason
Murray tied the game again. All the
signs seemed to be pointing towards
overtime until Aylmer scored with
32 seconds left to sneak the victory.
They added an empty net goal
eleven seconds later to
final 6-4.
SEAFORTH 4 - AYLMER 3
The Midgets travelled to Aylmer
Sunday with visions of tying the
series. Once again, things looked
bleak when Aylmer scored at 12:50
of the opening period. Fearful of
giving up an insurmountable lead,
Seaforth fought back. At 5:38 Brad
Moore shovelled in a rebound to tie
the game. Feeling the pres:;u re,
Aylmer folded like a dock of cards.
Just over a minute later, Wayne
Schoonderwoerd pushed a rebound
past the Aylmer goaltender and
Seaforth had the lead for the first
time in the series. At 14:25 of the
second period Dean Finnigan scored
to make it 3-1 for Seaforth. Steve
McInatly added the capper at 5:45
when Jeff Flanagan carried the puck
into the Aylmer end, drew all the
defenders to him and then dished a
pass to the trailer on the play,
Mc[nally, who scored. Aylmer
added a pair of goals in the third,
one of which was a pass that went
off a skate in front of the net, but
goaltender Adam Agar was too
quick and defencemen Jeff
make die
Flanagan; -JitI - Crowley, Colin
Devereaux, and Jeff Ryan were
tough.
ON TAP
The results of last night's
(Tuesday's) game three were not
available at press time. Game 4 is
Friday in Aylmer and game 5 is
also in Aylmer on Sunday.

Novices win bronze
medal in area tourney
Having just come out of a great
two weekends of Huron -Perth tour-
nament and championship play,
where Seaforth finished second in
the novice C division, the Novice
AD ringette team ended the year
with a bronze medal showing in
Kitchener this weekend in the Nov-
ice C Invitational Tournament.
In the first game in Kitchener on
Friday morning Seaforth defeated
Waterloo 2 ringette team.
Seaforth later defeated Elora 12-4.
Goals were scored by Meaghen
O'Reilly, Danielle deVries,
Michelle Durst, Stephanie Kelly and
even resident defencewoman,
Kendal Carnochan, moved up to
forward to pop in a goal. Helping
out with assists on the goals were
Megan (Carnochan), Emily
Ratcliffe and Kate Camochan.
Courtney Fisher played a great first
period in net and then Erica Murray
jumped in and made some great
saves for the second period.
Suzanne Coleman did a great job
on defence.
With two wins under their belts
Seaforth marched on to win its third
game against Meaford on Saturday.
The girls put on a great show for
• •
the fans by coming back from a
two -goal deficit with less than five
minutes in the game to win and
advance to the finals. Meaghen
O'Reilly put in all three goals and
the rest of the team's great defence
and passing kept Meaford from
tying it up even though they were
pressing. Rookie, Samantha Bisset,
played a strong offensive game and
earned an assist from her hard work
and the great goalkeeping of
Stephanie Kelly and Emily Ratcliffe
sure kept the local ringette squad in
the game.
Because of the three wins
Seaforth advanced to the bronze
medal game at 7 a.m. on Sunday
morning. Against Kitchener 1 the
play was back and forth although
Seaforth peppered Kitchener's
goalie with shots in the last 3 min-
utes, the local ringette team
couldn't seem to put the ring inside
the net and lost 8-6. Emily Ratcliffe
donned the goalie pads for the
whole game this time and made
dozens of great saves.
The coaches would like to thank
all the girls for a terrific season of
ringeue.
