"Cows are happy to be milked. They don't mind getting up for that." Ernst Gubelmann, a dairy fanner at RR 4 Walton, purchased 59 mats from Promat dealer Huron Dairy Products in Brussels in late Decem- ber. He's noticed a difference in his bam. "When the cows get up it's not slippery. Some had swollen legs before. They're much better now," said Gubelmann. Sometimes he walks in after chores and the entire herd will be laying down. It's important they are comfort- able in the barn, especially now when they're only out once a week in the field, said Gubelmann. When the summer arrives, his herd of Holsteins and Brown Swiss will stay outside every moming. Gubelmann uses straw on top of the mat to help with the cleaning of manure. He says some farmers use sawdust instead. In experiments with the mats in dairy barns, Doug Young has found that if only a few mats are put in the stalls, those stalls are occupied 100 per cent of the time and the cows in them are reluctant to give them up. That phenomenon disap- pears when the whole barn is filled with mats. But when only a few mats are in the barns, the cows develop strategies to hold onto the stalls with the Pasture Mats. At one farm, one cow headed straight to lay down in the stall after leaving the milking parlor instead of going to eat. She would DAVID seem PHOTO SOFT LANDING - A finished Pasture Mat comes off the line at Promat Ltd. in Seaforth. Each mat contains the equivalent rubber of 10 car tires. Regular stalls create an unnatural environment for cattle, says Young. "They're eating and standing around (in stalls). Cows naturally graze, walk and lay down." Promat buys this material from a supplier. The prototype of the Pasture Mat was developed in May, 1992. It was on the market in January, 1993. Currently, there are 20 dealers across Ontario selling the Pasture Mat and 50-60 dealers nationwide. About half of the mats being pro- duced in Seaforth are sold in the United States. "We received a lot of help and encouragement from OMAF. They've been a very big help," said Young, who developed the original prototype for Pasture Mat. "We're still developing and improving it. It's turned into a very interesting product." HOLY WEEK SERVICES - 94 St. Columban and St. Patrick's Parishes LITURGY ST. COWMAN 5T.
