Seaforth vs. Mitchell
Old hockey rivals meet in division finals
Cents' streak ends in Mitchell
It's down to the final four.
The•defending champion Mitchell
Hawks only lost throe games this
season while cruising to a first -
place finish in the Western Division
of the Ontario Hockey
Association's Junior Development
League. Now the Seaforth
Centenaires will have to beat them
four times in the next two weeks to
steal the division title and advance
to this year's championship against
the winner of the Port Stanley-
Thamesford series.
• It's a tall order and on paper
Seaforth's prospects arepoor The
sixth-place Centenaires tui 'shed a
whopping 32 points behind the
Hawks in the standings.
But it's spring and against all
odds the Cents are still playing
Cinderella, and the game is played
on ice not paper.
Exeter and Lucan were good
teams too and both fell in four -
straight games to the Centenaires,
which you might have been locked
up in loony bin for predicting a
month ago. The Hawks got by a
surprisingly tough North Middlesex
squad in six games, then swept Mt.
Brydges to reach this series.
This is the first time the Hawks
and Centenaires have ever met in a
division final, so it won't take a lot
of "do or die" speeches or coaches
banging garbage pails with sticks in
the dressing room to motivate either
team. The matchup is a marketing
dream and fans are in for a treat.
"We always play Mitchell tough,
even in those seasons when we've
only had a mediocre team," says
Centenaires general manager Gregor
Campbell, remembering in particu-
lar a game last season at Mitchell
when the shortstaffed Cents were
outshot 22-3 in the third period but
still emerged with a 2-1 win.
He points out this series has some
interesting undercurrents beyond the
natural rivalry that stems from the
closeness of the two communities
and the historic sporting ties that go
back to the days of Morenz and
Weiland. The Centenaires' assistant
coach Joe Chaffe, for instance, is
the brother of Mitchell head coach
Jack Chaffe, who used to play for
the Cents in the mid -80s, along
with Mitchell assistant Jeff Pauli,
when the Hawks suspended oper-
ations for a season. Jack and Joe
own a beef feedlot and work
together every day. Seaforth head
coach Maurice Guy played his
minor hockey in Mitchell before
Last chance for title for
overage Seaforth players
going on to a Junior B career in
Stratford and Sarnia. Also, Hawks'
sniper Kory Dietz was Cents' lead-
ing scorer three seasons back, a
teammate of some current veterans
on the Centenaires.
"That's another thing," the
Seaforth general manager adds,
"this is also the last kick at the can
for some of our veterans who will
be overage next year and have
never been this close to an OHA
title before. They want to win this
thing even more than I do, so win
or lose, we won't quit and when the
series is over the Hawks are going
to know they were up against a
good and hungry hockey team."
Seaforth and Mitchell met five
times this season with the Hawks
winning four times and the Cents
once, by a shutout. Mitchell
outscored Seaforth 18-11 in those
games, but they were close with the
Cents losing twice by a goal, and
another time by two goals, the last
of which went into an empty net.
The Hawks were the' top defens-
ive team and second best offensive
team in the West this season. The
Centenaires were second best when
it came to defence, but way down
the list when it came to offence.
Mitchell had two 30 -goal scorers
(#18, Rob Boville, 36 G 32 A for
68 points and #11 Dietz, 33 G 32 A
= 65 P) and another pair of 20 -goal
scorers (#5 Jeff Smith, 21 G and 33
A = 54 P and #9 Rob Jarmuth, 22
G and 31 A = 53 P). Seaforth's
only 20 -goal scorer was Paul
McLlwain (26 G 28 A = 54 P).
Hawks' goaltender Darcy
Ballyntyne finished with the
league's best goals against average
at 2.50 and Mitchell's other goalie,
bantam -aged Elliot Faust, who
started more games, was second
best at 2.63.
But veteran goaltender Dana
Duskocy remains the Cents' "ace in
the hole." He has always been a
great pressure goaltender, best when
the chips are on the line and fat is
in the fire, but this season he has
sometimes been simply phenomenal
during Seaforth's eight -game
playoff run, posting eight wins and
sporting a 1.83 playoff goals against
average entering this division final.

into the finals on Sunday.
The opposing team, H. & L.
Satellites, from Barrie had to beat
Parr Line twice and as it turned out
the first game was a tic one -one
when all of a sudden the Satellites
tucked in a second goal for the win.
On the first shift of the second
game, Parr Line scored 'and it
looked like things may turn around
but with two minutes left in the
game the Satellites tied it up again
and then came back with a second
goal to take the lead and time ran
out for a comeback. But Seaforth
came away with a silver medal
from the championships.

eight -game playoff roll hit a
brick wall at Mitchell Monday
night where they were beaten 4-
2 by the hometown Hawks.
It was the opening game of
their OHA Junior Development
League Western Development
final. Game two is at Seaforth
Thursday night at 8 p.m.
Kory Dietz scored twice for
the defending champs, including
an insurance goal into Seaforth's
empty net with nine seconds left
on the clock. The Hawks are
now on an eight -game playoff
winning streakof their own.
Seaforth jumped to a 2-0 lead
by early in the second period on
goals by Paul McElwain and
Chad Ramer, but couldn't pro-
tect it or muster much offence
after, as they were outshot 41-
12. Jeff Smith got the winner on
the tail end of a powerplay in
the fust minute of the third
period. Jeff Lewis also scored
for Mitchell.

The Huron Soil and Crop
Improvement Association and
Monsanto are sponsoring a meeting
at the Seaforth Agricultural Society
building on Wednesday, March 30
at 10 a.m. This is a follow-up to the
successful meeting held in '93
which dealt with no -till drills. This
year no -till planters will be the
focus, and several will be on dis-
play inside the exhibits barn. The
farmers who designed and use these
planters will be on hand as well to
discuss how and why they have
made changes in their equipment
and crop production practices.
Referee Brad Beer tagged each
team with three minors.
Jamie Ramer's goal with 1:21
left in • overtime allowed the
Cents to advance to the final, as
the locals swept Lucan with a 3-
2 win in the fourth game of the
semi-finals at Seaforth last Tues-
day. Don Scott and Steve Geiger
also scored for the Cents.
