Also slated for closure this spring, is the veterinary services laboratory, which provided specialized services such as autopsies on livestock for farmers within a wide radius of the college. In making the November announcement, Huron MPP Paul Klopp said he still had "his fingers crossed" in hopes of keeping the veterinary services lab open, but that prospect now appears dim, unless a private operator for the facility surfaces. The private sector appears to be the primary potential market in an ongoing search for new uses for the college spacious and well-maintained facilities, says Lou Di Gironimo, of the Ontario Development Corporation, which acts as landlord for the college and other buildings within the Huron Industrial Park. Di Gironimo said numerous par- ties have shown interest in the college, but none with plans or resources for u operations large enough to require the entire facility. Not surprisingly, many of the proposed uses involve education. The Huron Board of Education "wants to be involved somehow," Di Gironimo noted. Seat & d4. of catacti.cg 6.. Other proposed uses have included an international pilot training school (The Huron In- dustrial Park contains a ful- ly -operational airport runway, which was recently upgraded by the ODC) proposed by a local flight service operator (who has since decided to move from the Huron Instustrial Park). That one, according to Di Gironimo, appears unlikely to fly at the present time. "I don't think it's going anywhere, in that particular form, but it's still a very serviceable idea tugnt school), ana again one that would obviously have to in- volve the private sector." Because of the quality of the facilities at Centralia, and the level of interest shown so far, Di Gironimo feels it's unlikely the buildings will sit idle indefinitely. "The buildings are in good shape. Everyone who's been in to see it is impressed with the facility. I'm still optimistic because there's been activity (inquires from prospective lessors)," Di Gironimo said. Farm Progress '94 -Page 9A A safety tip keeping Children Out of Harm's Way Many child fatalities on the farm occur when youngsters aren't under adult supervision. Toddlers are nm over by equipment that is being backed up. Older kids are trapped in flowing grain; while other youngsters fall into ponds or manure storages. A fenced yard may be the only answer for the little ones. Farm children may face more hazards than kids in an urban ghetto! Their safety is the respon- sibility of adults.
