Local hockey
player shines
in junior B
Rugged veteran centreman Steve
Papple, of Egmondville, was recent-
ly named the best defensive forward
in the Midwestern Junior B Hockey
League.
While specializing in keeping
points off the board he also man-
aged to put a few on it this season
for Elmira's Sugar Kings, averaging
almost a point a game, finishing
with 16 goals and 21 assists for 37
points in 39 games, along with 283
penalty minutes.
Sugar Kings coach and general
manager Bob Zimmer, formerly
head honcho with the local junior
Centenaires, says Steve's strongest
suit is his team play, leadership and
support of the team's younger
players. "He has been a welcome
asset both on and off the ice,"
Zimmer adds, "and he comes to
play every night."
Papple notched three game win-
ning goals for the Sugar Kings who
had their best season in a decade,
finishing 10 games above .500 but
were eliminated from the playoffs
by the powerful Stratford Cullitons
Friday night. Six of Steve's goals
came on the powerplay and another
was scored shorthanded.
Steve, 19, is the son of Tom and
Dawn Papple_of Egmondville. He
played minor hockey locally arid -
had earlier junior B stints with the
Petrotia Jets and St. Marys
Lincolns. He is currently working
on becoming a plumber's apprentice
in Waterloo.

The first Pee Wee hockey game
on Feb. 27 in Seaforth's division
playoff series was won by Seaforth
3 to 1 when they came up against
Clinton. Seaforth scored first when
Derek Nesbitt sent in the rebound
of a shot by Scott Henderson
helped by Jason Hulley. Clinton
scored their only goal a few min-
utes later. Some great passing plays;
between Ryan Van Dooren, Tim'
Sills, and Scott Van Dooren failed
to add to Seaforth's total as did a
beautiful pass in front between
Jamie Dick and Mark Vock. Final-
ly, on a Clinton penalty, Derek
Nesbitt set up Scott Van Dooren for
Seaforth's second goal. In turn,
ScottVan Dooren then set up Ryan -
Van : )ooren for the final goal.
The second game on March 1
ended in a tie with 8 goals apiece.
Seaforth's goals were scored by
Tim Sills (2), Scott Van Dooren,
Derek Nesbitt, and Scott Henderson
(4). Players who picked up points
for assists were Scott Van Dooren
(3), J.D. Nolan (3), Scott
Henderson, and Ben Murray.
Seaforth moved ahead with one
more win over Clinton on Sat.,
March 5. The final score of 10 to 4
was a pleasing reward for some fine
co-operative play by Seaforth.
Clinton got the fust two goals
within the fust three minutes of
play but that just seemed to fire up
Seaforth which came back with five
goals of their own in the first
period. To start Seaforth off, Derek
Nesbitt, realizing that he was about
to be checked, sent the puck up the
ice to Scott Henderson who carried
it in to Clinton's end and then

by Dwayne Pryce great passing by
Jerry Bremner and Neil Mitchell.

passes by Vern and Adrian.
SOCIALITES 3 - PERTH 1
Perth scored first goal as quick
draw Beth Consitt slips the ball
over the opposing goalies' head,
thanks to Wendy Triemstra's pass.
The Socialites have the knack for
goal -scoring this season, goals by
quick hands Marg Henderson,
Hacker Theresa Campbell and quiet
Charlene Townsend. Good to have
you back in the swing of things,
Charlene! Direct passing by Joan H.
Henderson, Jen Marion and Carol
Humphries.

RAIDERS 3 - ROYALS 1
Raiders finally get out of their
slump as goals scored by Vern
Gewais, Dave Kramers and Paul
Wick, what passing by `Mr. Blaine
Pryce' himself! However the Royals
sneak in a quick goal by mighty
Mark McCarthy great passing by
other brother Dale McCarthy.
GRADS 2 - KNIGHTS 1
Grads' quick goal scored by
slippery Jerry Burtch and quiet Al
Wynja, quick wrist passing by
Martin Wynja ,and Tony Van Den
Huevel. Knights just couldn't buy
another goal, single goal achieved
by defenceman Jim Nyhenius
assisted by Larry Baer. Great over-
time game by both teams.

after J.D. Nolan and Ryan Van
Dooren combined efforts to set up
Scots Van Dooren for another great
display of play -making. Next Scott
Van Dooren and Scott Henderson
assisted J.D. Nolan with a goal. The
next five goals were scored by
Scott Henderson with the help of
J.D. Nolan, Scott Van Dgoren, and
Craig Somerville. Clinton scored
two more goals bringing)the score
to 7 - 4 but Seaforth stayed strong
and shut down Clinton's scoring
attempts with strong goal -tending

double hat trick for the night. They

Writeathon
for fundraiser
On Sunday, a Seaforth resident
wrote a twenty -page short story
in one sitting as a fundraiser for
the Seaforth Community Hospi-
tal.
The `writeathon,' which took
place at the hospital, was part of
Tim Cumming's 52 -event mini
marathon, which has raised more
than $2,400 in donations or
pledges to the hospital.
Sizzlers win two to
advance to finals
In the Huron -Perth Play-off Tour-
nament the Seafotth Sizzler
advanced to the championship game
to be held on Sunday, March 13 by
defeating Exeter 13-3 and Stratford
8-1.
The Exeter squad, as usual, gave
the Sizzlers a good first half. How-
ever, thanks to good goaltending by
Sarah Agar and excellent defensive
play by Ali Devereaux, Katie Hot -
and Jeaneue Crowley, the
Sizzlers outscored Exeter ten goals
to none in the second half, and
Seaforth won the game. Marsha
Denys scored Seaforth's first three
goals, earning a natural hat -trick
and then scored another late in the
game to total four. Jenny
DelVecchio also scored four goals,
Jessie Finlayson netted two, Becky
deVries two, Kim Devereaux two,
and Katie Holland, one. Assists
were recorded by Jenny DelVecchio
(5); Kim Deveraux (5); Jeanette
Crowley (3); Becky deVries (2);
Marsha Denys (2); Katie Holland
and Jessie Finlayson.
Stratford gave Seaforth goalie
Sarah Agar an early wake-up call
by scoring only 7 seconds into the
game but one minute later Jenny
DelVecchio scored, unassisted to tie
the game. Then the Sizzlers went to
town on Stratford. While Sarah
stopped numerous shots on net.
Kim scored four goals, Marsha
netted two and Jessie one. Assists
were awarded to Jessie (3); Jenny
(2); Ali (2); Lori McKay (2) and
Marsha, Kim and Becky one each.
Sarah and her awesome defence of
Katie, Jeanette, and Ali denied
Stratford another goal and the
Sizzlers won the game 8-1.

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE
SUBSTITUTE DECISIONS ACT
AN IMPROVED LAW
ABOUT POWERS OF
ATTORNEY GOES INTO
EFFECT IN EARLY 1995.
It's called the Substitute Decisions Act,
and it's designed to give people more
control over what happens to them if '
they become mentally incapable.
Recently, people have been asking serious
questions about the Substitute Decisions
Act. When does it come into effect? What
do I need to know? How will it affect me?
YOU NEED TO KNOW
• THE SUBSTITUTE DECISION ACT IS
NOT COMING INTO EFFECT ON
MARCH 1, 1994.
The act will only become law in early 1995.
• YOU DON'T HAVE TO MAKE A
POWER OF ATTORNEY IF YOU
DON'T WANT TO. Not now. Not ever. You
don't have to, hut there are some good reasons
to do so. By making a power of attorney, you
can make sure that someone you trust has the
legal authority to make decisions for you if you
become mentally incapable. In other words,
you decide who (Wiles.
• A POWER OF ATTORNEY ISA LEGAL
DOCUMENT. BUT YOU DON'T NEED
A LAWYER TO CREATE IT. A power of
attorney names the person or persons you have
chosen to make decisions on your behalf. It
defines their responsibilities and clarifies your
wishes. You may want to consult a lawyer for
advice, especially if your finances are complex.
Ontario
But you don't have to. In a few weeks, the
Ontario Government will'make free power of
attorney forms available, along with guidelines
on how to complete them.
• IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A POWER OF
ATTORNEY FOR YOUR FINANCES,
YOU DON'T NEED A NEW ONE. If you
have already nude a power of attorney that
names someone to make financial decisions if
you become incapable, it will still be effective
when the Substitute Decisions Act becomes law.
The Substitute Decisions Act expands your con-
trol by allowing you to choose someone to make
decisions about your personal care as well.
• THE PUBLIC GUARDIAN AND
TRUSTEE WILL ONLY MAKE FINAN-
CIAL DECISIONS ON YOUR BEHALF
AS A LAST RESORT. If you are mentally
incapable and if no one else is willing or able
to act for you, the Public Guardian and Trustee
may be required to act on your behalf.
The Substitute Decisions Act was developed
through extensive consultations and was passed
unanimously by the Ontario Legislature in 1992.
The idea behind the Substitute Decisions Act is
simple: By creating a power of attorney for your
financial affairs and a power of attorney for your
personal care, you can make sure that someone
of your choosing has the legal authority to act on
your behalf.

Decisions Act or get free power of attorney
