HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1994-03-09, Page 5Lifestyle INTERNATIONALLY -KNOWN BAND - One of Seaforth's proudest exports is the Seaforth and District High School March- ing Band which is headed to the Can -Am Festival Days in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The band is scheduled to leave on March Sea 11 and return on March 19. The band, composed of about 64 members, will leave with about 20 adults. The band will be performing at the Convention Centre at Myrtle Beach during a reception which attracts thousands of tourists. orth band heads to United States By Charles Kalbfleisch The Seaforth District High School Marching Band is off again to entertain the people of Myrtle Beach area. The group will leave with 64 band members and 20 adults at 4 o'clock, Friday, March 11 and return on Sunday, March 19. The Marching Band will perform on Monday morning, March 14, at 9:30 at the Convention Centre. This is a reception for visiting tourists put on by the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce. It usually attracts three or four thousand tourists. The girls will play at the main Myrtle Beach Mall on Tuesday at noon and Thursday at the Inlet Mall. Both of these events are well publicized on the local T.V. and in the newspaper. The band began working for this trip last April by preparing for upcoming parades in June and July. April and May are our recruiting months, and it is necessary to look for new dedicated members who are Seaforth girls marching band headed to Myrtle Beach willing to work hard and learn our marching drills. The girl§ come from high schools across the county - Seaforth, Clinton, Goderich, Exeter, and St. Mike's in Stratford. We also have elementary students from Clinton, Holmesville, j3oderich, Seaforth, and Brucefield. The band has prepared a march- ing drill beginning with our national anthem, "0 Canada". We begin the routine''with a pin wheel using the music, "Old Time Rock and Roll", followed by the "90210" theme and finishing with an electric piano solo of the same number. From a W formation the girls Wipe Out featur- ing two drum solos followed by the wheel formation using the song, "Joy To The World". The band moves into a circle for the song, „Pretty_ -Woman", and dances into tune to the music. we nntsn the drill by forming a heart and finish by playing the song by Bryan Adams, "Everything I Do For You". The band makes every trip an educational experience. They will spend one day touring Charleston, South Carolina where the American Civil War began at Fort Sumter which is located in the centre of the harbour. The Band will have a walking tour of the old homes, visit Citadel University, City Hall, and the old slave market. The band's drum major this year is Janine Jones who leads the band through the routine. She is also responsible for training the dancers who form an integral part of our routine. Our flag twirlers are trained by Angie Good and Julie Williams. They --are also part _ of the choreography of the marching drill. The Seaforth District High School Marching Band has traditional flag carriers that advertise Canada, prov- ince, and Huron County Towns. The band is sponsored by the Huron County Board of Education and also receives donations from service clubs, legions, and the Town of Seaforth. The girls raise money by performing in parades across Southwestern Ontario. They performed in 15 parades and played to a live audience of over one mil- lion people and were seen by over 200 million on T.V. They appeared nationally on Global, CBS, and the Super Channel in Europe. Our band members are grateful for the work done by our Booster Club and their executive, along with our hard working tour co-ordinator, Brenda Kenny. The band is proud to represent Canada during the Can -Am Days in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Seaforth Manor has bible study Resident s of Seaforth Manor Nursing Home enjoyed an afternoon 'Bible Study' with Rev. Sloan this past week. Thanks to Seaforth Public School volunteers Rachael Hennipman, Amanda Brugger, Brent Webster, Armand Dube and Josh Brown for assisting with the JSeaforth Manor Nursing Home Manor bowling league. Worship service was conducted by Rev. GRADE 7-8 PUBLIC SPEAKING WINNERS - Winners in the Legion Zone C-1 public speaking contest in Seaforth on Saturday were Olga Sajkowski (third place), grade 7 at St. Joseph's in Clinton; Shannon Scott (first place), grade 8 at Hullett Central; Rachael Bushell (second place), grade seven at Lucknow. They are shown with Charlie Perkins, Chair of Youth Education for Branch 156 and Len Stilling, Chair of Youth Education for Zone C-1.
