Midgets sweep Elora
In a span of five days, the
Seaforth Midgets havo moved into
the province's final four teams by
sweeping Elora three games to
none.
GAME ONE
In the first game of the series
Tuesday, Feb. 22 in Seaforth, the
hometown crowd was pleased early
when Steve Mclnally left a puck for
Wayne Schoonderwoerd who
subsequently gave Seaforth an early
lead. Elora fought back and evened
the score less than a minute later.
Not to be outdone, Jason Henderson
took a pass from Brad Moore and
scored with a wrist shot to regain
the lead.
The floodgates opened in the
second period, Steve Mclnally
scored two and Dean Finnigan put
Seaforth up by four. Elora got one
early in the third but Seaforth
answered back with another goal
from `Dutch lightning', Wayne
Schoonderwoerd, who added
another for a hat -trick, Elora scored
another but it was too little too late.
GAME TWO
Two nights later Seaforth
travelled to Elora to continue their
quest for the All -Ontario. Elora's
goaltending which had been shaky
in game one, shone in game two.
This meant trouble for Seaforth.
Finally the second period, Dean
Finnigan made a few beautiful
moves to heat the Elora goalie on a
set-up from Jason Murray and Steve
McInally. Just over a minute later
Brad Moore gave the puck to Jason
Henderson who gave it to, Wayne
Schoonderwoerd who buried
another one. Elora cut the lead in
half with 3:12 remaining in the
middle period but Seaforth struck
again short-handed. Once again it
was Wayne Schoonderwoerd. Elora
would score again but Adam Agar's
stellar goaltending held them away
in the late stages.
GAME THREE
Did someone mention
goaltending? With Chad Lamont
out due to severe shoulder
problems, Agar was again the
starter in goal, this time in an effort
to sweep Elora. To cut out the
suspense, we'll say right off the
top: Agar didn't allow a goal. All
the scoringwas done by Seaforth.
On their frst shift of the game, the
line of Henderson -
Schoonderwoerd - Moore scored the
eventual winners, Schoonderwoerd
scoring on assists from Henderson
and Moore. Late in the first Dean
Finnigan took feeds from Jason
Murray and Colin Devereaux to put
Seaforth up by a pair. Steve
McInally scored two more in the
third period and Adam Agar made
countless brilliant saves to preserve
the shutout. A Seaforth fan waved
the symbolic broom, a signal that a
sweep had just occurred.
THE SERIES
Seaforth had some defensive
troubles but was able to hold Elora
down. Defencemen Colin
Devereaux, Jim Crowley, Captain
Jeff Flanagan, Jeff Ryan and Brent
Hulley held the fort while the
forwards did their thing.
Seaforth scored 14 goals in 3
games, an average of more than
four and a half per game. There are
many names on the scoresheet, but
there are a few who hit hard, kill
penalties, and do things that often
don't earn sufficient recognition.
Mike Hugill, Mike Smale, Jason
Smith, and Shaun Anstett are those
players.
ON TAP
Seaforth is now in the semi-finals,
preparing to play the winner of
Exeter -Dresden. Postings of game
times will be in the arena.

Ringette champions
In the Ontario ringette prelimi-
naries to determine the Champion
"A" Ringette team in Western
Region and the Western Region
representative at the Provincial
Championship last weekend the
Seaforth Ringette Association was
represented in three of the four
championship games. The Debs and
Tweens, won silver and the Petites
won gold.
This 'A' Championship earned
the Sizzlers' their second Regional
gold medal in two years, last year's
at the "C" level, and the privilege
of representing Seaforth and West-
ern Region at the Provincial Cham-
pionships in April.
The opening game of the Tourna-
ment was against Kitchener and the
Petities started off with a bang
when Marsh Denys assisted Jenny
DelVecchio who scored only 20
seconds into the game, and again
mid -way through the first.
Kitchener scored early in the sec-
ond but Lori McKay scored on a
pass from Katie Holland to win for
the Sizzlers.
Saturday morning, the Petites met
Walkerton and the Sizzlers won.
Scoring for Seaforth were Kim
Devereaux (2), Marsha (2), Lori (2)
and Jenny. Assists were earned by
Jessica Finlayson (2), Jeanette
Crowley (2), Becky deVries,
Marsha, Lori and Kim.
When Seaforth met Chatham, at
12:30, the game was predicted to be
a preview of the final. Before the
Sizzlers' knew it, they were down
4-0. Then, the girls dug in and
scored three unanswered goals, the
first scored by Marsha, assisted by
Jenny, the second scored by Becky,
assisted by Jenny and the third
scored by Jessica, assisted by Kim
and Melissa Vanbakel, to narrow
Chatham's lead to one goal.
Chatham scored again to add some
insurance but Jessica netted a pass
from Kim to bring it, once more,
within one. With two Chatham
players in the penalty box, and the
Seaforth goalie on the bench, the
Sizzlers tried and tried to even up
the game and Kim rang one off the
crossbar with fifteen seconds left
but Chatham won 5-4.
The Sizzlers played Dorchester
and managed to shut -out, winning
3-0 on goals by Marsha, Kim and
Jessica, assisted by Jenny, Jessica
and Kim.
Debs and Tweens win
silver. Petites win gold.
Early Sunday morning the
Seaforth squad seemed to be a little
more awake than Stratford as they
checked and shot their way into a
early 2-0 lead. Scoring first was
Kim on a pass from Lori and
Jessica. Marsha shot a pass from
Ali Devereaux for the second goal.
Stratford scored in the last minute
to come close but Jessica, from
Katie, scored right back to give
Seaforth a 3-1 lead at the half.
Jessica scored early in the second
on a pass from Kim but Stratford
seemed to awaken and scored four
goals to take the lead. Kim worked
a pass in to Marsha who found the
net and evened the score and then
each side tried for five minutes to
break the tie, however the game
went into "sudden -victory" over-
time. After one and a half minutes
of play, Jenny fired a Marsha
Denys deflection into the net to
give Seaforth the win and a berth in
the Championship final against
Chatham.
After some breakfast and with
that thrilling Olympic hockey game
as inspiration, the Sizzlers were
ready for Chatham. Kim scored,
assisted by Lori and Jessica, just 40
seconds into the game but Chatham
evened it up on the very next play.
Jenny neued two, the first from
Becky deVries and Ail Devereaux
and the second from Becky and
Melissa Vanbakel, before Chatham
scored their second. Jessica netted a
"spinner" after receiving a pass
from Kim and Lori and then Kim
fired one in unassisted to give
Seaforth a 5-2 lead at the half.
Chatham got the next two and
narrowed the Sizzlers' lead to one
before Jenny scored two more, the
first unassisted and the second into
an empty net and the game ended
with the Sizzlers defeating Chatham
8-4.
Congratulations to the Sizzlers
and to Kim Devcraux who was
named MVP of the game.
The Coaching staff of Joanne
Holland, Brad Finlayson, Jan
DelVecchio and Deb Denys are
very proud of their team.
