Dental work and a now porch
were keys for the two Seaforth
LACAC 1993 Designated Property
Improvement Awards presented In
Town Council Chambers by
Seaforth Mayor Hazel Hildebrand
on Feb. 24.
The Commercial Property
Improvement Award went to Ken
and Liz Cardno for their storefront
work at 39 - 41 Main Street South;
Cardno's Men's Wear and Seaforth
Insurance Brokers. The storefront
work on the Cardno building
included painting and restoration of
'dental work,' a roof -line trim.
Seaforth Insurance Brokers and
Cardno's Men's Wear form part of
the Cardno block originally built by
Alexander Cardno (great-grandfa-
ther of Ken Cardno) in the 1870s.
The old Cardno opera hall is
located on the floor above the
stores. It was in operation from
1877-1954 and was a major venue
of live entertainment by both local
and travelling troupes. Exterior
renovations were done to Cardno
Hall in 1983-84.
The Residential Property.

'The House nobody wanted'
BY DAVID SCOTT
Expositor Staff
They live in `The House That
Nobody Wanted.' That was the title
of a presentation made by Paul and
Joan Spittal of RR 3, Seaforth at
the Seaforth LACAC's Designated
Property Improvements Awards
night at town hall on Feb. 24.
The Spinals moved in 1988 from
their two-storey house in Goderich
which they had built only 10 years
earlier to their current one and
three-quarter storey Gothic farm
house on the Bayfield Road which
once belonged to Bible Bill
Aberhart, founder of the Social
Credit party in Canada.
"Some people thought we were
out of our minds to forsake this
comfortable niche in favour of a
country address," said Joan Spittal
However the property met their
two important conditions: 1) The
house had potential, 2) It was
located near a town.
"The house appeared unremark-
able at first glance. However, upon
closer inspection one could see the
house had potential," said Joan
Spittal.
Their adventures began on the
first trip to the house when Paul
Spittal and his brother Peter jacked
up the home which caused some
cracking in plaster and walls. They
also discovered the water in the
house was contaminated when Peter
poured some whiskey in a glass,
added water and the drink turned
black. The drilling of a new well
was one of the first priorities.
In order to make the home more
comfortable for their family of four
they decided to hire architect John
Rutledge of Ooderich to assist in
renovations.
Exterior
The summer of 1989 the Spinals
removed the asbestos siding the
previous owners had added in 1947.
Some rotted sections of the exposed
wooden siding had to be remade to
match the original.
Green and white were chosen as
the paint colours for the exterior,
"Some people thought
we were out of our
minds..."
consistent with the original house.
In 1990-91, a solution was found
for the installation of a new bath-
room. A wall in an upstairs back
hall was moved to create more
space.
During the same time the kitchen
was also relocated to its present
position, adjoining the dining room.
The kitchen and upstairs bathroom
were done at the same time as the
pipes for both went together. A
galley style kitchen was constructed
with a peninsula and cupboards.
During this period, a new septic
system was also built. "Wells, sep-
tic systems, electrical service, etc.,
are all considerations when purchas-
ing country property; said Joan
Spittal.
The framework and trim in the
old farm houses is normally fancy
at the front of the house and
simpler as you get further into the
house, explained Paul Spittal, who
also emphasized the importance of
having an architect help with resto-
ration and renovation.
"The architect will solve the
problems, if you follow the sugges-
tions," he said. Optional 'A, B and
C' plans were drawn up for the
Spittals for additions to the house.
Most recently, restoration of the
dining room was started. During the
work an original stencil design for
the house was discovered under
layers of wallpaper. As well an
unusual free-hand design on the
walls done in coloured charcoal and
protected by clear varnish was

"When you initially look at the
place you can be overwhelmed...but
don't be scared to renovate," said
Joan Spittal, who offers the follow-
ing tips to would-be renovators:
• You must be either handy, pre-
pared to learn as you go, or be a
millionaire)
• Patience is not only a virtue but a
necessity.
• A sense of humour is a must.
She closed with the comment
"We have come to the awareness
that we are not so much owners of
this interesting old house and farm
but stewards of the land who will
eventually pass along this honour
and obligation to the next owners."
History or the Spittal House
The property was part of the
original 100 -acre farm which
spanned both sides of the Bayfleld
River and was purchased by
William McConnell (a farmer and
clerk of Tuckersmith Township),
from the Canada Company in 1852.
The first house on the property
was a log cabin. From historical
references, the present house was
built some time prior to 1879.
Previous owners of the Spittal's
home included the Aberhart family,
including William ("Bibb Bill")
Aberhart, who later became Premier
of Alberta during the Depression -
years and founded the Social Credit
