Seaforth leads Mitchell in the best of five
series 2-1 with two straight home wins
After a lengthy break due to
exams, the Seaforth Midgets are
back in action and poised to win
the WOAA championship.
Due to their superior regular
season record, Seaforth earned a
bye straight to the WOAA final
series against Mitchell. The first
gone of the series was slated for
February 7 in Mitchell.
The game started well for
Seaforth with 7:25 minutes left in
the fust period Jason Murray
pushed one past the Mitchell
netminder off a Steve Mclnally
pass. By the end of the period
Mitchell had taken the lead 2-1
Seaforth scored twice quickly but
Mitchell tied the score. With less
than five minutes left in the period
Seaforth again took the lead on a
Steve Mclnally goal. The third
period saw Mitchell again tie the
game but late in the period a fluke
goal gave them the lead, Seaforth
went home down by one game.
The next night Seaforth was
determined. Just thirteen seconds
into the game Jason Murray scored.
He added another goal eleven
seconds later. Jeff Ryan scored five
minutes after that, Steve McInally
added one late, and Jason Murray
another even later to end the first
period. With a 5-0 lead, Seaforth
was not ready to quit. Mclnally
scored again, but amazingly
Mitchell managed to answer with a
goal. Seaforth popped in another
two before the end of the period
and Mitchell got another to make
the score 8-2. Another pair of goals
in the third gave Seaforth ten goals
and Chad Lamont steered away any
Mitchell attempts and the `game
ended as the Midgets had hoped:
the embarassment of their enemies.
On Feb. 12, the two teams met
again in Seaforth to determine who
would take the lead in the best -of -
five series. Things started all -wrong
for Seaforth and preuy much stayed
that way. Bad bounces played a key
in Mitchell's 2-0 lead at the end of
the second period. With their backs
.against the wall the Midgets came
out fighting and at 12:56 it payed
off. Dean Finnigan pumped a goal
past the Mitchell netminder and the
floodgates opened. Seaforth tied the
game at 6:48 and went ahead at
1:38 on a McInally goal. Adam
Agar redeemed himself and held the
fort with poise and cat -like reflexes.
A late goal left the score 4-2 for
Seaforth.
ON TAP
What could be the final game of
the series was played Monday
night. Results were not available at
press time.
Junior Ringette edged by Goderich
On Monday, Feb. 2, the Seaforth
Juniors Ringette team travelled to
play their arch rivals, Goderich.
Although Goderich started the
scoring, Seaforth's centre, Kelly
Devereaux fired one past
Goderich's male goalie, to tie the
game 1-1. With less than a minute
Left in the first period, Goderich
managed to score another goal, to
end the period with a 2-1 lead.
Seaforth began the scoring early
in the second period with an unas-
sisted goal by Melissa Finlayson.
With less than 3 minutes to go in
the second period, Seaforth's Kathy
Devereaux shot one past the
Goderich goalie to give Seaforth the
3-2 lead. Fifteen seconds later
Goderich lofted one past Seaforth's
goalie, Julie agar, to tie the game 3-
3. Goderich's last goal of the game,
was scored with 27 seconds left on
the clock, the give them the 4-3 win
over Seaforth.
Hard skating, excellent passing,
strong defence and goal -tending
contributed to this close-knit game.
