Regis- tration begins at 11 a.m. Greeters at Duff's United Church on the 10°F day of Jan. 30 were Chris and Shannon Davies. Rev. Banks wanted to let people to know that the Official board meets at Walton on Feb. 9 at 8. The United Church Women will meet at 12:30, Feb. 2 starting with a pot- luck dinner and former members to be invited. On Feb. 16 the Sunday school will host a Pancake Breakfast 8:30 to 9:30. For those of you who are wondering whether or not Rev. Banks will be the egg flipper this year, have no fear for he has been promoted to a different job. Rev. Randy Banks posed this question to . the congregation of Walton's Church: To what extent does a sermon occupy our hearts and minds after we leave this place? At the dinner table? At the coffee shop?' Is it important? Rev. Banks recalled when the norm for writing sermons was to consist of 3 points and a poem lasting 20 min. Now it seems that 10 minutes is bordering on too long in this "Don't bore me' culture. "There is a new nickname for the 17-29 age group which will succeed the baby boomers. The word is 'baby -busters'. They are described as the first generation to view enter- tainment not as a privilege but as a right. So in order to catch their auention the sermon must have some entertainment value. In Rev. Banks view a sermon should instruct, convict, admonish and uplift. And it is uplifting to know that there are many who do attend church even though they could be involved in more exciting, alterna- tive activities. This was in the bulletin that I would like to share with readers of this paper. Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny. Frank Outlaw Dublin by Dorothy Dillon 345-2883 Will the groundhog see own shadow? Priest urges Christian unity BY 1'IM CUMMING Expositor Editor Look to meaning of Lord's Prayer, says Father Angelo Bovenzi Outside St. Thomas Anglican Church on Wednesday night the weather was bitterly cold. Inside the church, however, about 45 Seaforth- area people heard warm words calling for, Christian unity. "Instead of dwelling on our dif- ferences we must dwell on what makes us the church, what makes us lovers of Jesus," said Father Angelo Bovenzi, who was invited to speak at the Ecumenical Service for the Week of Prayer for Chris- tian Unity. Father Bovenzi noted how the differing words used for the Lord's Prayer have been a cause for divi- sion among Christian denomina- tions. "Our experience with that prayer has not been...kind, we fought over the words," he told the congrega- tion. "We can laugh about it or joke about it but that prayer has been a cause of division and even hatred." What is most important, he said, is the meaning behind the prayer. Father Bovenzi is priest of the Holy Spirit University Parish in London and chaplain of Western University. At Wednesday's service he urged those assembled to take action on Christian unity. Just complimenting the service but not acting on its message is a "cop-out," he said. In his homily he recalled meeting other Christians during his travels abroad and enjoying their fellow- ship. In speaking of world Christian evangelism he said there must be respect for all cultures, including respect for the eastern religions and Native North American religions. Six members of the Seaforth- Egmondville clergy took part in Wednesday evening's service. They were Rev. Cheryl -Ann Stadelbauer- Sampa and Rev. NM ?Action Prudential mutual funds make headlines! RRSP's INVESTING SMARTLY This year like every other year you will see on TV and read in the papers and hear on the radio that this bank or trust company have the best rate for your RRSP money. There is even one Mutual Fund company that says they OUTPERFORM! My question is who? They certainly did not outperform PRUDENTIAL and if you check with many mutual fund companies they were not even close to bettering their returns. But they still say they outperform. WHO? The banks that's easy. Maybe Trimark should reword it and say we outperform the banks? No one fund will be the best fund to invest in year in year out. The leading fund one year may not be in the top 20 the next year. It's human nature to jump on a high rising fund or stock but it's usually too late by the time you join in, most of the profits have been made, the smart way to invest is to buy into a family of funds that are ABOVE AVERAGE IN PERFORMANCE EVERY YEAR.
