Centenaires win exciting comeback
The oldtimers call it "turning it
up a notch."
The Centenaires did Sunday night
when they rallied from three goals
down to end a five -gape losing
streak with a 5-4 victory over the
North Middlesex Stars at the
Seaforth and District Community
Centres. Friday night the Cents
played well on home ice in front of
a nice crowd on "Minor Sports
Night" but fell 5-3 to the Mitchell
Hawks, the defending champions
and Western Division leaders in the
Ontario Hockey Association's Jun-
ior Development League.
Sunday night's dramatic
comeback was the first win of the
New Year for the sixth-place Cents
who now have a 14-13-4 record and
play again Saturday night at 8:30 at
Mt. Brydges. Seaforth hosts Lucan
in its next home game Tuesday
night at 8 p.m
Prospects were depressing for
local fans late in the second period
Sunday night with Seaforth trailing
4-1. Then goaltender Jamie
Redmond stifled a Stars breakaway
that might have made things even
gloomier, and a combination of
familiar faces and new pulled the
Centenaires back from the brink.
Andy Scott, who has struggled
making the adjustment to junior
after scoring 32 goals and adding
27 assists for the Goderich Midgets
last season, started the comeback
driving to the net with the first of
his two goals, a 'wraparound' that
went in off the back of the goalie's
pads with 5:34 remaining in the
second period. Less than two min-
utes later Ted Sills feathered a pass
through the slot to Paul McLlwain
who made it 4-3 going into the
third.
Scott then drilled the low hard
equalizer, his ninth of this season,
past Stars goalie Andy Glavin just
1:49 into the third setting the stage
for captain Karsten Carroll who,
fresh from a three-point perform -
ante at the All Star game the night
before, found the inside of the post

WHICH WAY DID HE GO? - Number 22 of the Mitchell Hawks and Centenaire Joe Murray appear to
mirror each others' movements in Friday's Junior Development hockey action at the Seaforth arena. The
league -leading Mitchell Hawks won the game 5-3. Murray had an assist in Fridays loss and three points
in Sunday's home victory against the North Middlesex Stars. Friday was Minor Sports Night at the arena.
from the point with 6:22 left in the
game.
Rookie Joe Murray, from Dublin,
is now scoring at almost a point -a -
game clip, following a three-point
performance. His 10th goal of the
season started things off for the
Cents and he chipped in two assists
to the comeback, giving him a total
of 12 so far. Ben Sen also had two
assists for Seaforth, and Karsten
and Kalen Carroll one apiece. Ref-
eree Jeff Smith handed out a total
of seven minor penalties in the
game, four to Seaforth.
HAWKS 5 - CENTENAIRES 3
The Centenaires continued this
season's tendency of playing better
against the division's best teams
than they do against teams the
standings indicate they should
handle quite easily.
The two old rivals were tied at 1-
1 after the first period but Seaforth
again had difficulty finding the
range, although they came tantaliz-
ing close on a couple of occasions,
and Mitchell took a 3-1 lead after
two periods and increased that to 4-
1 early in the third. Then the Cents
struck twice in 18 seconds to make
things interesting -far the final 12

Seaforth Atoms
give Mitchell close
contest in game
On Saturday, Jan. 22, the Seaforth
Atoms hosted Mitchell.
Mitchell scored the first and only
goal in the fust period to take the
lead. Seaforth's Derek Nesbiu tied
the game in the second with assists
by Ryan Willis and Dan Nash.
Mitchell answered back with a goal.
In the third Seaforth had a good
scoring chance and cashed in Dan
Nash fed the puck to Derek Nesbitt
who carried it in and blew it past
the goalie.
With the momentum flowing,
Dean Wood scored a goal assisted
by D. Nesbitt. All they had to do
then was play defensive and hang
on to the lead for another 11 min-
utes.
It wasn't meant to be however,
Mitchell scored with 2:41 remaining
to tie and scored the winning goal
with six seconds left in the game.
