Atom hosts win Optimist tourney
Seaforth Atoms faced Lambeth in
the first game of the Seaforth Opti-
mist Atom Tournament on Satur-
day, Jan. 15, 1994 at 8 a.m.
The home town crowd, who had
crawled out of their warm beds on
one of the coldest momings of the
year to offer support, were not
disappointed by the Seaforth Atom
squad. The scoring began in the
fust period with a goal by Daniel
Nash, assisted by Derek Nesbitt.
From there it continued and never
let up. By the end of the first,
Seaforth had a 4-0 lead. Other goals
were scored by Curtis Murray,
Derek Nesbitt and Jason Anstett,
with assists being credited to Ryan
Willis, Kyle Henderson and Derek
Nesbitt.
By the second period Lambeth
had come alive, holding Seaforth to
scoring only- once. This time Jason
MacDonald set up Derek .Nesbitt
for another goal.
Derek Nesbitt scored again in the
third assisted by Daniel Nash, who
then scored himself on a set-up by
Derek and Jason Anstett.
When the buzzer sounded,
Seaforth's score was 7, Lambeth 0.
Congratulations to Dan O'Reilly on
his shut out!
In the second game of the tourna-
ment Seaforth met their old rival -
Mitchell. Seaforth had not beaten
Mitchell this season and were out to
prove themselves contenders.
Seaforth opened the scoring with
two quick goals Less than a minute
apart. Derek Nesbitt netted the first
on a pass from Daniel Nash, while
Curtis Murray was credited with the
second with assists from teammates
Tim McClure and Ryan Willis.
Mitchell fought back and tied 2-2,
and had the momentum for another
two goals. Seaforth realized a
come -back was in order and. with
4:12 left in the final period it payed
off. Jason Anstett one -times the
puck pass the Mitchell goaltender
on a play created by Derek Nesbitt
and Daniel Nash.
The fans were anxious for another
goal and although both teams had
numerous opportunities it looked as
though the score was to remain 4-3
in Mitchell's favour. Kyle
Henderson had other plans, as he
made an end to end attempt and put
the puck between the pipes for a tie
game.

The new year brings a new
season to the sports program at
,t S.D.H.S. - girls volleyball. Off to a
flying start are eleven girls and two
dedicated coaches. If's a young
team, consisting of only two
returned seniors, Monica Ryan and
Cora Allen. Robyn Carnochan, also
a senior, was an active member of
the team but suffered from a broken
leg, which put her out for the
season. Karen Skea, Sarah Johnston
and Carrie McLlwain are the
players in grade twelve, and from
grade eleven there are Lindsey
Salverda, Sandra Dale, Marcy
McCall, Tracey Janmaat, Laura
McKerchcr and Lisa McKay.
Led by their coaches, Mr. Ron
Ritchie and Mr. Warren Hill, the
girls practised from 7:15 until 8:40
for three mornings a week.
Attendance and commitment is
encouraging.
The weekend saw the team
travelling to Walkerton for their
second tournament of the season.
The girls managed to win one out
of two from Saugeen (Port Elgin)
and Strathroy. With two important
games left, the girls faced F.E.
Madill (Wingham). In order to
advance to the semi-final round,
both -games had to be won. The
team shone with there best
performances yet this season, and
handily beat the Madill team twice.
The semi-final game saw Seaforth
matched against their county rivals,
South Huron. The Exeter team
came out on top after two games,
the second of which was extremely
close.
The girls should be proud of their
efforts. A vast improvement is
showing, and this team is definitely
one to watch for in the future.

tie.
The boys headed into the third
knowing their work was cut out for
them. Their extra effort and good
team playing was rewarded late in
the third. The trio of 'Sooner, Bird
and Nessi" (Daniel Nash, Jason
Anstett and Derek Nesbitt) did their
magic. Before the Exeter goaltender
knew what was happening, the puck
went from Dan to Derek to Jason
and between the posts. 1:02
remained and Seaforth hung on to
the lead.
"The tension mounted, the puck was dropped and
both teams were out to prove
themselves winners."

Again several scoring attempts were
possible but excellent saves from
the Mitchell goaltender and
Seaforth's Dan O'Reilly made the
game remain in a tie. The decision
was up to the judges. When the
referees consulted the officials the
Seaforth bench erupted into cheers.
They had outshot their opponents 4-
2, thus advancing the Championship
game.
Novices shut out Clinton team
Weather played havoc with the
Novice I schedule as the team
played only two of four scheduled
games. However, in the games they
did play the Novices tied one and
won the other in convincing
fashion.
In a home game against a deter -
m ined Goderich squad Josh Holland
scored on a solo effort in the first
period to spot the locals in early 1-
0 lead. After Goderich tied the
score, Seaforth outplayed the visi-
tors through a scoreless second. In
the third Holland scored his second
on a powerplay with Nick Elligsen
and Steve Carnochan assisting on
the goal. Goderich tied the game
late in the third. Playing with the
man advantage Seaforth missed
several glorious opportunities but
Goderich hung on for the 2-2 tie.
Last Friday's game against
Clinton was a different story as
Seaforth dominated against the
younger, less experienced visitors.
Barry Young and Mike DelVecchio
set up hard -shooting Mark Flanagan
for the first and winning goal as
Seaforth went on to skunk Clinton
9-0.
Seaforth scored six times in the
second period as six different
players dented the twine. Greg
McGrath started the onslaught with
a coast-to-coast rush. Steve
Camochan, set up by linemates
Jason Denys and Flanagan upped
the lead to 3-0. Joey Nesbitt used
his speed to pull away alone land
score an unassisted goal. Barry
Young made it 5-0 on passes from
Camochan and Elligsen. Kyle
Devereaux converted a Nesbitt pass
for his goal and hardworking Brent
O'Reilly finished off a Steve
Camochan pass for the 7-0 lead at
the end of the second period.
In the third Barry Young got his
second of the game with help from
Mark Flanagan, who had a three-
point game and Mike DelVecchio
rounded out the scoring for the
eventual 9-0 route. A balanced
attack, strong defence and steady
goaltending all played a part in the
decisive victory for the Seaforth
Novice I's.
Cents have goal drought
A goal a game won't win you
many as the Seaforth Centenaires
continue to prove in the Ontario
Hockey Association's Junior Devel-
opment League.
They wasted a strong performance
by goaltender Jamie Redmond
Sunday night at Seaforth and fell 3-
1 to the Alvinston Flyers who, to
add insult to injury, only brought 16
players with them, three of whom
were midgets. Last Wednesday
night at Lucan the Centenaires
played a better game but could still
only manage to light the lamp once
so dropped a 4-1 decision to the
Irish, despite an equally -impressive
start by their other goaltender, all-
star Dana Duskocy.
"It's a good thing we've got the
goaltending otherwise we'd be in
big-time trouble and might never
win a game," said Centenaires
general manager Gregor Campbell
after Sunday's fourth -straight loss
which he described as "disappoint-
ing". After a promising eight -game
undefeated run late last year
Seaforth hasn't picked up a point in
1994 and has only managed to total
of five goals in those four losses,
all without their leading scorer Paul
McLlwain in the lineup, out
because of a six game suspension
that has now ended.
The immediate problem facing the
Centenaires is the defending cham--
pion and league -leading Mitchell
Hawks, who are in town Friday
night at 8:30 for "Minor Sports
Night," and just itching to revenge
after the 3-0 shutout Seaforth pres-
ented them with on their last visit
December 28, which now seems so
long ago and was the Centenaires'
last win. Seaforth also hosts the
North Middlesex Stars Sunday night
at 8 p.m. In between will be the
All-Star Game at Lucan Saturday
night, which features among others
Karsten Carroll, Duskocy and
•McLlwain from the Centenaires.
McLlwain, with 19 goals and 19
assists in 22 games, hasn't played
in more than five weeks, since
December 12, because of the sus-
pension made even longer due to
the postponements 'because of bad
weather conditions in between.
"We lack offensive depth," said
Campbell. "The other teams are
now saying to beat Seaforth all you
have to do is neutralize 'Mac' then
pound on our small forwards to
wear them down".
The Centenaires' general manager
adds he would like to use some
affiliate forwards off the Silver
Stick champion local midgets more
to inject spade up front, but the
midget and junior schedules have
conflicted too much this sea,son up
until now, and these snipers are
mostly unavailable for the next little
while because of high school
exams.

IRISH 4 - SEAFORTH 1
It was the Centenaires best game
of their losing streak. They had
some glorious scoring opportunities
but couldn't finish. Lucan put its
last goal into an empty net. They
led 1-0 after their first period and
2-0 after the second. Steve Geiger's
1 lth goal of the season, assisted by
Ben Sen, at 12:11 of the third
period broke Steve Watson's shut-
out bid. Newcomer Adam Rogers
showed promise of becoming an
asset for the Centenaires with some
linebacker like hits, particularly one
on Irish captain Andy Ross, who
kept his head up for the remainder
of the evening. Referee Jeff Smith
gave the Irish six minor penalties,
including an qwesr, two 10-
minute mio fighting
majors and two game misconduct.
Seaforth's totals were identical,
subtracting one minor, the aggres-
sor.
The Centenaires' game at
Belmont Saturday night was post-
poned because of blowing snow and
closed highways. 1t has yet to be
rescheduled.
