Midgets capture championship
Adam Agar sharp in net for Seaforth
continued from front page
Early in the second period Dean
Finnigan drove a Jason Murray
pass into the Parry Sound goal
to put Seaforth in the lead. Then
the Jason Henderson, Wayne
Schoonderwoerd and Brad
Moore line took over with 7:45
left in the middle period,
Schoonderwoerd knocked in a
rebound after a lengthy assault
on the Perry Sound goal. Just
eleven seconds later
Schoonderwoerd took a pass
from Henderson and leftit for
Moore who took a shot on net.
Just before it reached the goalie
Schoonderwoerd tipped it down-
wards through the unsuspecting
keeper's legs. Five minutes into
the third, after Parry Sound had
scored to make it 3-1, Moore
took a pass from Jeff Flanagan
who'd set up by
Schoonderwoerd and slid it past
the netminder. Late in the game
Steve Mclnally broke away and
made a beautiful move to make
the final score 5-2.
SEAFORTH 4 - KESWICK 0
Saturday moming Seaforth
played Keswick, who had
already thrashed their first oppo-
nent 7-2. Early in the first period
Dean Finnigan gave Steve
McInally a pass who then drove
in on the Keswick net and
passed to Jason Murray who in
turn slipped the puck into a wide
open goal. Less than a minute
into the second Wayne
Schoonderwoerd buried a goal
on a set-up by Murray Moore
With 31.7 seconds left Jason Murray scored
added another goal later on and
Seaforth headed into the third
periodwitha3-0lead.Infrus-
tration, Keswick took many
penalties and, as a result,
focused less on the game and
paid the price. Murray added
another goal late, completing
Keswick's embarassment and
Adam Agar shut them out, fur-
ther enraging the team (which
showed little class). Keswick
took 41 -minutes in penalties in a
40 minute game, including a
match penalty (deliberate intent
to injure) and a gross miscon-
duct (inapropriate behaviour).
SEAFORTH 4- ST. MARYS 1
Saturday night, playing at 11
p.m. because of bad scheduling
and earlier delays, Seaforth
needed only two points out of a
possible 10 to clinch a berth in
the final. Less than two minutes
ito the opening period Moore
took a perfect pass from
Schoonderwoerd and put
Seaforth up 1-0. Steve McInally
followed up less than three min-
utes later and Seaforth won the
first period, earning the two
magic points. Berth or no berth,
Seaforth wasn't done yet. Ban-
tam call-up Jason scored two
thirds of the way through the
second and Jeff Flanagan blasted
two short-range missiles that
nearly burned a hole through the
mesh and Seaforth won 4-1.
Agar and Lamont were near
perfect again, allowing only one
goal.
Attheendoftheroundrobin,
Seaforth had earned 28 of a
possible 30 points, winning their
division by 10 points and earn-
ing a trip to the finals gainst
Port Hope, the winner from the
other division.
SEAFORTH3
PORT HOPE 1
This game could be called the
most entertaining game this year.
The excitement started on the
first shift. Port Hope applied
pressure with a scramble in front
of the Seaforth goal. A Port
Hope pla er got 2 sticks on a
loose puck and Adam Agar was
forced to make a brilliant save,
keeping the game scoreless.
Seaforth weathered several Port
Hope storms in that first period
and waited for a break. It came
at 8:45 when Mike Smale fought
his way in front of the Port
Hopenetandpushedinaloosepuck. It looked as if that goal
would stand, considering Agar's
glowling performance at
Seaforth's end. It was constant
end-to-end action all the way
and Seaforth got a little breath-
ing room early in the third. The
line of Steve Mclnally - Jason
Murray - Dean Finnigan was
pushing on a goalmouthscramble and fatally Finnigan
CentenaireS to meet Lucan
Maybe the weather has got them
down - too much snow and lack of
sunshine or something? Or, maybe
they've been watching the Leafs too
much - who are similarly spinning
their wheelsmost_of _the -time these
days?
Whatever it is the Seaforth
Centenaires continue to look less
than ordinary in the New Year.
Most played as if they wanted to be
somewhere else, like they would
have rather had a "snowout" at
Alvinston Friday, night where they
were outhustled and lost 5-2 loss to
the hometown Flyers in the Ontario
Hockey Association's Junior Devel-
opment League.
Tonight (Wednesday) the Cents
try to snap out of this winter hiber-
nation at Lucan with an 8:15 game
against the Irish Six. Saturday night
they travel to Belmont for a 7:30
game with the Pests, before return-
ing to the Seaforth and District
Community Centres Sunday night at
8 p.m. against Alvinston again.
Seaforth started Friday night off
on the right foot. Don Scott and
Ted Sills on the powerplay gave the
Centenaires a 2-0 lead until the
17:52 point of the first period when
the Flyers got a powerplay goal
back. Seaforth goaltender Dana
Duskocy then took exception to
Alvinston charging his crease while
he was flat on the ice, so
straightened up his assailant with a
slap from his blocker. The Flyers
Centenaires sign former Brussels Bulls player
scored on the powerplay again and
the period ended 2-2.
Alvinston scored three more times
in the first five minutes of the
second, driving the usually depend-
able but obviously distracted
Duskocy from the net after the first
two. The Centenaires affiliate
goaltender Scott Wood went the
rest of the way, one of the two
brighter spots in the game for
Seaforth, the other being the play of
defenceman Scott Wright.
The five goals in a little over
seven minutes put the Flyers into
overdrive and, although that was all
the scoring in the game, Alvinston
beat the Cents to the puck the rest
of the night and Matt Danbrook
was steady in the Alvinston net.
Steve Geiger had a pair of assists
for Seaforth and Chad Ramer and
Wright chipped in one apiece. Ref-
eree Derek Edwards gave Alvinston
nine minor penalties, a checking
from behind major and game mis-
conduct. Seaforth took eight minors.
Since upsetting the defending
champion Mitchell Hawks in their
last game of 1993 the Centenaires.
have only managed a total of three
goals in two games, while giving up
11. Meanwhile their 13-10-4 record
has them a solid sixth but the teams
immediately ahead of them in the
standings are slowly inching out of
scored. The crowd erupted and it
looked as if Seaforth was on its
way. That goal didn't phase the
excellent Port Hope team. With
only 2:33 left in the game, Port
Hope finally beat Agar to pull
within one. Pure bedlam broke
loose and with 31.7 seconds left
Jason Murray scored on a
breakaway to put the game
away. Only one penalty was
taken in this game because nei-
ther team could afford to be
down a player for any length of
time.
When all was said and done,
the Seaforth Midget Hockey
Club walked away with the
North American Silver Stick and
a lot of respect and a lot of
hardware:

reach, with only about five weeks
and a dozen games left in the- reg-
ular schedule. Leading scorer Paul
McLlwain still has two games
remaining on a suspension, but is
due back Sunday night, and feisty
sparkplug Jason Hayter also missed
Friday's game with the flu, as did
Jamie Redmond. Don Rivers was
operating at less than full tilt for the
same reason.
HOT STOVE LEAGUE...The
Centenaires have signed Adam
Rogers from Harriston. He is . a
buddy of defenceman Trevor Smith
and student at Mohawk in
Hamilton. Rogers played two games
for the Brussels Bulls a couple of
years ago before an injury ended
that season. He can play both for-
ward and defence but prefers to
play up front..Jeff Buck, the
Centenaires playoff MVP two sea-
sons ago, has signed with the junior
B Elmira Sugar Kings...Dan
Wildfong, who played with the
Cents from 1990-92 and was the
team's MVP in his final season,
represented the St. Marys Lincolns
at the Westem Junior B league's all
star game on the weekend. At last
count he was tied for fourth in
league scoring (16-33-49)...Seven of
those Western B all stars originally
come from the Junior "D"
evelopment League.
Seaforth Tykes blast Blyth
On Saturday, Jan. 8 the Seaforth
Tykes travelled to Blyth for their
frust away game of the new year.
The Tykes play was better than the
weather outdoors as the team
played "firewagon" hockey and
dominated their Blyth counterparts
by a score of 17-2. The teamwork
of the Tykes contributed solidly.
A display of the goals and assists
in this game would fill a page of
the Expositor this week and in
many cases the work and the play
involved to set up the goals was as
pretty to watch as the goals them-
selves.
Seaforth attack was centered
around Bradley Henderson, Brendan
Murray, Callahan O'Reilly,
Matthew Dalton, Matthew
Camochan, Tyler Elligsen and
David Verberne.
The Seaforth defence squad of
Seniors brave bad
weather to bowl
Thirty-six Senior Bowlers turned
out on a cold Friday, Jan. 7 to
commence the 1994 Season.
The ladies did not come through
with any 200 scores. Betty
Lconhardt had high single 178 and
triple 467.
Campbell Wey must have been
doing a bit of practising during the
holiday season. He had a superb
single 268 and triple 639.
Other men over 200 were Ron
Bennett 220, John Aubin 207 and
Don Wood 200.
Bowling well over their averages
were Oliver Price, 196; Pred
Mannings, 181; Watson Reid, 180;
and Norm McLean, 165.
Mary Finlayson will be reporting
to the paper for the next few weeks.
Brittany Williams, Adam Broome,
McKenzie Fisher and Ryan Nurse
played a solid game. Clearing the
puck from the defensive zone,
keeping the opposition's attack
under control and also keeping
them hemmed in their zone. While
headmanning the puck the entire
game, the passing and teamwork
displayed by these youngsters
would make any parent or coach
proud.
Seaforths' goalie of the game,
Stephen Medd, did well in pouncing
on any loose pucks that came with-
in close range of his cage. What the
players are learning in practice is
carred over and demonstrated in
the games.
The Tykes' next game is in
Zurich on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 5
p.m. There is no Saturday practice.
There is a practice on Sunday, Jan.
16 in Clinton at 4 p.m.
