World Refugee Day was
noted and celebrated around
the world and on social
media, but here in Goderich,
it meant welcoming a new
family to the community.
Hosted by the Multicul-
tural Association of Perth -
Huron, last week members of
the community and Mayor
Morrison were in attendance
of a barbecue and live enter-
tainment, to welcome the El
Ali family to Goderich.
"I want to welcome the
newest addition of our town.
I am confident that you will
find Goderich to be a very
welcoming community and
as Mayor, I would love to be
able to take the time to show
you around the community
as we welcome you to make
Goderich your home," Mayor
Morrison said to the El Ali
family at the welcoine event.
"To all of those who are
involved with the refugees and
the immigrants who are corn-
ing to Goderich and the County
as a whole, I want to thank you
as well. "Io those that are dedi-
cated to make the families feel
welcome, I thank you. We are a
very welcoming country and
with everything that is going on
in the world today, I think it is
important that we do count our
blessings. On behalf of the
Town of Goderich, I would like
to thank everyone for being
here today in recognition of
World Refugee Day.'

Knox Church is getting
ready for the annual, free noon
hour Summer Concert series.
This year there is an excit-
ing line up of talent ready to
entertain us.
The first concert is sched-
uled for July 5, and is featur-
ing Kindred Spirits, a new
group of five harpists, who
bonded over their mutual
love of the instrument and
their close friendship with
each other.
Each of these ladies has a
long and varied history of
music shaping their lives; all
are currently students of
Sharon Johnston.
The longest playing harp-
ist in the group is Beth Mac-
Kenzie, from Amberley. Beth
has been playing harp for 20
years, but she is also a won-
derful pianist.
She loves to write music,
and will often perform with
her brother, who plays flute.
Mary Moffatt, from the
Kippen area, is the. organist
at Brucefield United Church.
Piano is another love of
Mary's as well. She was a
teacher and principal, which
is how she met Cathy Smith,
the leader of the group.
Cathy received a degree in
voice from Wilfred Laurier,

and then came to Brucefield,
where she shared her love of
music with her students at
Brucefield Public School.
Cathy taught music in
Brucefield and then Goderich
for over 30 years before retir-
ing. She now sings with the
MacKay Choristers, studies
harp with Sharon Johnston,
and directs Kindred Spirits.
Marjorie Duizer, who hailed
from Londesborough for
many years before moving to
Goderich, is also a member of
the MacKay Choristers, along
with several other choirs in
the area, and she shares
Cathy's love of singing.
Thyra Knudsen from Clin-
ton, who loves anything
Celtic, performs Celtic dance
with her partner all over
Southwestern Ontario.
It's not surprising that this
lively group would connect
through their love of harp
music, and that is what hap-
pened in April of last year,
when they joined together to
form the group Kindred
Spirits.
Since then they have been
in great demand around our
area.
Their busy schedule
includes performing for
birthday parties, fundraisers,
nursing homes, and Church
Services.

They have appeared in
Londesborough for a song-

the homeless, as well as at
many local Churches.
