By day he'll be riding his bicycle, by night he'll be sleeping in a tent. Everything he needs to survive will be strapped to his body or his bike. Robertson is donning a helmet and hopping on his bicycle to raise money for the Canadian Mental Health Association in memory of his brother Shane, who died last November. At 27 Shane took his own life after struggling with addiction and mental health issues. The fundraiser, which is called "Ride for Hope" will see Robertson, who lives in Belmont, ride across Canada. The journey will start on July 2 at Covent Garden Market in London and finish around the middle'of September in Victoria, B.C. The cross-country trip has been in the works for a long time. "Growing up we always had plans on doing the trip together. Never really got to do that so I decided to maybe try to make some good come out of (the) situation," Robertson said. Robertson's family is fully sup- portive of Ride for I lope. He works for the family business, Raw for Pets in Aylmer, which is one of his sponsors. The first stop will be in Grand Bend, then onto Goderich, up to Kincardine and the fourth stop will be in the Bruce Peninsula before the fifth stop in Tobermory. After that Robertson will take the ferry across Lake Huron where family will drive him to Sault Ste Marie. From there he will continue his journey across the Prairies through to British Columbia. Robertson, 26, isn't worried about how he'll physically do the 4, 300 kilometer trip, even though he isn't an avid cyclist, He's worried about how he'll be mentally when the road stretches out long before him, when he's alone in places he's never travelled, when he's thinking about all that's riding on him com- pleting the journey. "The distance isn't what I think is going to be the trouble. I think it's going to be more mental. Just being alone out there, new grounds, new territory," Robertson said. Right now Robertson isn't think- ing about the challenges, he's thinking about his brother and all the support he's received since he started. "Ever since 1 started this cam- paign for the fundraiser, Ride for Hope, all the love and support I've been getting from all of my friends, family and even just complete strangers. They support what I'm doing. That really, really pushes me," Robertson said. Robertson has received sponsor- ship from three local businesses, but he's still far from reaching his goal of $100,000.
