The Carnochan Award recognizes an individual who has contributed many years of service to the herit- age community. The OIHS is pleased to announce that Paul Carroll is one of two recipients of the 2016 Carno- chan Award. The Ontario Historical Society's Carnochan Award honours, "an individual who has contributed many years of service to the heritage community." This year the society is pleased to recog- nize Paul Carroll of . Goderich. "Just to be nominated for such an award is humbling, but to be selected is truly an honour. I wish to express personal thanks to my nomi- nator, Barry Penhale and to those who submitted letters on my behalf," said Carroll. "I want to express my appreciation to the selection committee and t� 011S for its ongoing provision of the Honours and Awards Program." Paul Carroll is an artist, author, educator, heritage advocate, sailor, and a mem- ber of a three -generation Lake Huron waterfront family. I Ie has served his commu- nity as a town officer, as a teacher, principal and super- intendent of education, and in heritage capacities such as President of the Huron County I iistorical Society. One reviewer has said of him: "Paul Carroll has con- sistently worked as an activ- ist for heritage preservation on multiple fronts and lev- els... [He] was a visionary who always diligently worked to gain input and partnership from various sectors within the commu- nity to create successful outcomes. For decades, as an educator, historian, poli- tician, tvritcr and active con)n)unity member, Paul has effectively used a multi- faceted and outward approach. There is often con- flict about what is important to preserve and to celebrate our heritage. But we must not shy away from it. Some- times you will prevail. Other tirnes, you will fail. But you will never regret that you have tried." The award was presented at the Annual General Meet- ing of the Ontario I Iistorical Society at the York University Senate Chambers in Toronto, Ontario.
