Last
Sunday many of us spent
time with our Fathers or on
the phone with them, or if
they have passed away, spent a
moment or two remembering
them and all they had done for us.
Father's Day has become a tradition
for many countries including Canada,
USA, England and Germany, but the
origins are often disputed.
There are those that believe a
woman by the name Sonora Dodd
from Washington came up with the
idea. Dodd was raised by her single -
parent father and after hearing a
Mother's Day sermon, came up
with the idea and in 1910 Father's
Day was held in Spokane. '
Some dispute that story and
believe that a woman in Fairmont,
West Virginia by the name of Grace
Golden Clayton suggested it as a
celebration of fatherhood in 1908.
The idea came to Clayton after a
mine explosion in a nearby town
saw the loss of over 300 men, and
the celebration would allow the
children to remember their fathers.
The exact origins of Father's Day
continue to be disputed, but
letters to the editor
The Syrian stopped
Dear Editor,
On Saturday last weekend, two
of us on hybrid bicycles set out to
ride the G2G trail from Blyth to
Monkton.
Parts of the trail were very
rough, so much so that, just before
reaching McNaught Line, my front
wheel fell off and we were unable
to find the missing axle and
It's everyone's beach,
Dear Editor,
My husband and I are Goderich
residents who live close to the Lake
Bluffs where we take daily walks.
Often we venture to the beach or
walk the length of the boardwalk
Our morning walks are a lovely
part of our daily routine.
Throughout the week, the
beaches are peaceful despite the
flocks of geese guarding their
young.
The weekendware another story
altogether.
Many tourists descend on
regardless of who had the idea first
or which year it first happened, it is
safe to say that the tradition of
Father's 1)ay is one that blossomed
naturally given that we were
already celebrating the mothers or
mother figures in our lives.
When it comes to things that
cannot be disputed, it is the fact
that our fathers or important father
figures in our lives play significant
roles in shaping all that we are and
who we will become.
Apart from nurturing and loving
their children, fathers are role mod-
els for their children and teach
them how to treat, work with and
respect a spouse; how one can be
strong and sensitive at the same
time; how to put family first; how to
be a true partner with their spouse
and teach wrong from right and
morals and ethics to their children;
they provide an example for their
children how to be a good person.
Fathers are often looked tans a .
symbol of strength, and it is with great
character that a father can break
those stereotypes and be multi-
dimensional as sensitive, emotional
and loving beings, while remaining as
a support and pillar of strength for
their spouses and children.
fastener.
So I walked my bicycle to
McNaught Line where I left it and
then walked to county road 25 and
55 to walk or hitchhike the 10 km
to Monkton where I had left my
car.
I was wearing a bicycle helmet
and for the first 3 km many vehi-
cles went by until my luck changed
so let's keep it clean
Goderich to enjoy the waterfront
and all it offers.
These tourists are delighted to
enjoy Goderich without paying to
park or visit any of the beaches.
In other beach areas of the Great
Lakes, this freedom is not always
existent.
The beaches of Goderich belong
to all and everyone is welcome.
But imagine my dismay on Mon-
day, to discover lots of garbage on
our beautiful waterfront.
My husband and I collecteddis-
carded water bottles,
Father's Day is a celebration of the
fathers and father figure in our live
and the sacrifices they have made to
give their children all that was possible
to give and then some.
It is a celebration of the love they
have for their children, and it is
also a celebration of remembering
moments with our fathers and all
that theyhave done to ensure we
feel loved and safe.
It is beautiful to have one day
throughout the year to stop every-
thing and celebrate the fathers in
our lives, but we must be mindful
that they can be celebrated every
day of our lives.
The father figure is one that
comes in many ways, whether a
biological father, an adoptive
father, a stepfather, or an uncle
who was more like a father.
No matter the father you have in
your life, these men have all invested
their time and their love into the
lives of their children, teaching them
valuable lessons and pushing them
to be better human beings.
They are there to protect their
children at all costs, but to also
show them the ways of the world
and provide guidance in times of
uncertainty.
due to Zaher, a Syrian Refugee liv-
ing
ving in Goderich, who stopped and
gave me a ride (he was on his way
to Toronto).
He said he was told that,' in Can-
ada (unlike Syria), you do not stop
and pick up Hitchhikers but he
thought I looked tired and took
pity on me.
I am.so glad that Canada.wel-
candy wrappers, beer bottles, Tim
Horton's cups and other garbage
items, all while on our daily Mon-
day morning walk
I felt great frustration because I
simply cannot understand what
people are thinking when they
drop garbage. Who do they think
will pick it up?
They are attracted to this pristine
waterfront because it is clean and
unspoiled. Yet these same people
enjoy it, then leave it dirty and
spoiled.
I do not know the solution to this
"Ihe stereotype that our fathers
are only protectors and our moth-
ers are only sensitive is so utterly
ridiculous - we are all human and
we all have emotions, sensitivities,
and maternal/patemal instincts.
In my opinion, it shows pure
strength in character to be able to
let down your walls and show your
inner thoughts and emotions to
others; to show your sensitive side,
and allow your children to under-
stand that feeling and communi-
cating are just as important as
being tough and resilient.
We only have one life and no mat-
ter how
at,terhow many father figures you have
in your life, we only get one father.
For some, that relationship might
not be perfect, or might have had its
rough patches, but if we still have
our fathers in our lives, it is impor-
tant to remember and be thankful
for all of their influence in our lives
and all of their sacrifices in order to
make a good life for their children.
So I hope this Father's Dayyou
spent time with him golfing or on
the deck with a cold drinkwhile the
steak sizzled on the barbecue. I hope
you took time to call your father just
to tell him you're thinking of him;
just to tell him you love him.
