From bpm until midnight last Friday
evening, 10 registered teams, countless
volunteers and spectators took part in
Relay for Life.
Approximately 100 registered partici-
pants, plus spectators and volunteers,
took to the GDCI track to support can-
cer research and to honour those who
are still fighting or to remember those
who lost their battle to cancer.
The evening included food and
drinks, several activities, live entertain-
ment from Local musicians and a sense
of community.
There were illuminated bags, which
spelled out 'Cancer Changes Every-
thing' across the .lawn. Local busi-
nesses sponsored a letter in that
statement on the lawn for $250, which
allowed Relay for Life to have enough
bags to spell out that statement,
which illuminated the track through-
out the night.
"The message of it being a journey
and going the distance and walking
together, that you're not in this alone, is
still very strong," Laura Pethick, Com-
munity Fundraising specialist
explained the significance of walking
around the track throughout the night.
There were also single illuminated
bags that Lined the track. These bags
were there in memory of someone that
has lost their fight, or in honour of
someone who is still fighting or has
won the fight.
"It can be about loss or it can be
about celebration. It's about how can-
cer has changed us and impacted us
and we are here to pay tribute to that,"
said Laura.
Laura provides staff support to the
fields of Huron -Perth communities.
When there is a community event like
Relay for Life going on there is a work-
ing group of volunteers called the Com-
mittee and they plan the event but
Laura helps guide and support the
event.

At the beginning of the evening's event, local cancer survivors made the first trek around the track, led by a pipe band as spectators cheered them on to
honour their struggle.
