Goderich Signal Star
Week after week the Signal Star
has the pleasure of publishing arti-
cles written by David Yates that
highlight historical events and fea-
tures of the town of Goderich.
Expecting nothing in return,
no recognition, Yates continu-
ously pumps out fascinating and
factual stories ranging in themes
but all focusing on the people,
events and community of
Goderich.
His articles take on the
letters to the editor
Day of Caring
The Goderich Adult Day Pro-
gram was blessed with two mem-
bers of the local Libro branches
join them for the United Way's Day
of Caring on Thursday June 8.
Under sunny skies Debra and
attributes of text -book style
meets interesting professor's lec-
ture on topics ranging from com-
munity service groups to local
murder stories.
"I guess teaching is in my DNA
and.writing local history is just an
extension of my classroom life,"
explains David.
He has spent the past 29 years
explaining or talking all day long
about Canadian and world history
to secondary school students in
Huron County.
It is important to also make note
that David was also a five -term
councillor from 1997 until 2014,
and that he would "just write local
stories for a hobby; adding that he
has "learned far more writing those
stories than you can just through
reading:'
"I started writing these .[arti-
cles] for the Focus in .January
Stately went to work beautifying
the gardens around the Adult Day
Program for the clients to enjoy
during the summer months ahead.
We also enjoyed the ladies
spending time with the clients
2007 when I was bored on yet
' another snow day. Then, they
became more regular because I
had to have something to do wait-
ing for my teenage kids to come
home on Friday and Saturday
nights," explained David.
"Now I write and research them
because I like doing it and I like
trying to bring to life, people and
events from the past. I really get a
lot of satisfaction when someone
calls with an idea for a story, or
when someone stops me in the
street and says they read my story
in the paper. An -d really, it's not
my story, it's our story - it's
history."
According to David, his wife
Kathryn and their three children,
Josh, Jessica and Tyler have all
been really supportive in indulging
his "rather obsessive" interest in all
things historical.
enjoying conversation, exercises
and adding a smile to their day.
Thank you Libro branch and
especially these two ladies for add-
ing to our day at the Goderich
Adult Day Program.
For someone to be so heavily
interested in all things history, and
find the time to write articles spe-
cifically on the history of Goderich
to be printed in the paper, it is
about time David was acknowl-
edged for that service to the
community.
As the new editor for the Signal
Star and on behalf of everyone here
at the Signal Star, I can confidently
say that your contributions to the
newspaper have not gone
unnoticed.
The work you submit each week
is greatly appreciated by the staff at
Signal Star, and thoroughly enjoyed
by the residents of Goderich.
So, thank you David, for your fas-
cinating re -telling of events and -
narratives of past events or citizens
of this great town. The paper would
not be the same without your
touch of local talent.
Sincerely,
A personal plea for Huron's Residential Hospice
I am a long time supporter of
hospice palliative care in Huron
and Perth.
As a previous teacher and facili-
tator of The Fundamentals of Hos-
pice Palliative Care and a retired
nurse in home care, I am fully
aware of the importance of this
most worthy cause.
It has always been my belief that
every new life that begins in this
wonderful country of Canada is
entitled to medical expertise in
obstetrical and neonatal care.
In the same respect, so too is
every life preparing to leave this
realm, entitled to be surrounded
by medical expertise in hospice
palliative care.
A residential hospice staffed by
nurses and physicians who are
certified in palliative care, as well
as volunteers who have received
such specialized training, fits this
criteria.
My plea to every community
throughout Huron is that you fully
support the residential hospices
that are being developed in both
Exeter and Central Huron.
The Hike for Hospice this past
May was a resounding success and
1 am so grateful to all who gave of
their time and finances to make it
so.
Now our campaign for Huron's
Residential Hospice is in full swing
and we need your help even more.
If you belong to a community
service organization, I ask that you
will encourage your members to
"step up to the plate" and help
finance Huron's Residential Hos-
pice as much as possible.
We have the opportunity of
acquiring an already established
'home' in our beautiful rural
Huron but we need your financial
support sooner rather than later to
make this a reality. Each and every
community needs to come
together to make this happen.
So often I hear about 'donor
fatigue' and I certainly understand
the frustration of all the requests
from many worthy causes.
But let me counter such
thoughts with a reminder of how
fortunate we are to live in a coun-
try such as Canada, where health-
care is truly affordable.
Here in Ontario, OHIP covers
the cost of care for someone at the

munity Support Services
'end of life' who wants to die in a
'home' atmosphere, surrounded
by medical expertise, with the
reassurance that even their fami-
lies are surrounded by the loving
support of compassionate staff.
'End of life' care will affect each
and every one of us some day, so
in this last half of 2017, I ask you to
make Huron Residential Hospice
your priority when you consider
whom to support.
I ask you to make Huron Resi-
dential Hospice your priority as an
individual, as a service organiza-
tion and for the betterment of
yourself and your community.

tial Hospice Committee
