Embracin Wet Golf Conditions Goderich Shuffleboard Club
There is no denying
that we have had a
very wet spring.
This month's column is
giving you the tips you
nccd to be successful
when playing in wet
conditions.
Swing 'thoughts # 1:
Take a hunker setup
When you address
the ball on wet turf
your feet will sulk into
the ground, just like
they do when you
swing from the sand. '1'o
offset the fact that your
swing arc has been low-
ered, make sure to grip
down on the club a full
inch. Position the ball
in the center of your
stance with irons. With
a hybrid or wood in
your hand make sure
the ball is forward of
center.
Swing Thought # 2: Hit
the grass in front of the
ball
Aim for a spot one inch
in front of the hall. Your
goal is to hit the hack of
a

the hall and then drive
your club into ground at
that spot. This gives you
ball -first contact and
deny and resistance from
the wet turf. A good swing
thought is to picture your
clubhead and right knee
reaching the ball at the
same time. (If your right
knee hangs back, you'll
catch it fat.)
Ruling: You can take
relief without penalty
from casual water (out-
side a hazard), but the
water must be visible
before or after you take
your stance. Talk with
your playing partners and
discuss this before
removing your hall.
- Swing Tips:
Tee Shots Don't Roll:
Normally, when your
tee shot hits the fairway
(hopefully) you can
expect 10-30 yards of
roll after the ball lands.
With the added mois-
ture in the ground, the
hall isn't going to go
anywhere. It'll land and
just stop.
You are going to need
to Club lip: When condi-
tions are wet the ball
doesn't travel as far and
we typically don't hit it as
clean as we would like. If
you would normally hit
your 8 iron from a certain
distance pull out your 7
iron and hit it like you
normally do!
Approach Shots Spin
Back: when the greens
are soft, your ball is going
to dig into the turf more
than it would normally.
Since the green is so wet
your ball might get a fair
bit of spin. The best way

to get around this is to
club up, and make a 3/4
swim;. The ball will travel
the same distance but
have less spin and fly on a
lower trajectory. Remem-
ber you are going to need
to fly it a little farther then
you are used too.
Bunkers are EXTRA
Punishing: Wet sand is
my definition of a golf
nightmare. Wet sand is
heavier, and heavy sand
is unpredictable. 'Ihe
way to deal with heavy
sand is to swing harder
on the downswing. 'Ihe
thicker sand will need
more force going •
through it to get the hall
out.
Putting: the greens will
be a bit slower so visual-
ize your putt 2 feet longer
than it is. For example if
you have a ten foot putt
make your stroke as if it
was a twelve foot putt.
Now's the time to get
out and golf you don't
need perfect conditions if
you use my tips.

Detroit Red Wing and Toronto Maple Leafs fans will be
delighted to see centerman Boyd Devereaux play in the
Hometown Heroes: Raise a Little Health charity hockey
game in Goderich, Ontario on Thursday, July 20th.
Devereaux's NHL career spanned over a decade. During
that time he played for the Edmonton Oilers, Detroit Red
Wings, Phoenix Coyotes and Toronto Maple Leafs. He saw
Stanley Cup glory in 2002, while playing with the Detroit
Red Wings. Devereaux ended his NHL career with a
hat -trick performance in his final game with the Toronto
Maple Leafs in 2009.
Devereaux spent a year in Europe with Switzerland based
HC Lugano for the 2009-10 season. He played 16 games
and recorded 4 points.
Post NHL, Devereaux co-founded a film company called
Waking Sound Productions. Devereaux's creations
chronicle fellow hockey players and showcase the skills
and talents they bring to the game.
Devereaux will be playing in the 4th annual Hometown
Heroes hockey game on July 20th, where he will return to
captain "Team Devereaux". This event supports three local
non-profit organizations: Gateway Centre Of Excellence In
Rural Health, Alexandra Marine & General Hospital and
the YMCA strong kids program. Tickets are available at
each of these organizations, the Goderich office of MP
Ben Lobb and online at www.eventbrite.ca. Tickets are
$10 for adults and $5 for children under 12.
