Last week the girls trav- elled to Etobicoke to com- pete against the top schools in the 'A' division at the OFSM tournament. Placed in Pool D, the sen- ior girls played in four Pool games, competing against Jean Vanier Catholic from Richmond Hill, Pere Rene de Galinee- from Cambridge, Louis Riel from Ottawa and Cite des Jeunes from Kapuskasing. The girls defeated Jean Vanier 4=0 as well as Cite des Jeunes•3-0 and they tied two games, 0-0 versus Pere Rene and 1-1 versus Louis Riel. Finishing in second place in Pool D with eight points, the girls advanced to the quarterfinal match last Thursday, competing against Hamilton District Christian. "The grunt match, or the quarterfinal game, you have to do everything you can to win that game. Sometimes you get the bounces and sometimes you don't," Coach Ray Lewis stated after theheartbreakingdefeat in the quarterfinal match at OFSAA. In a heart -breaking end to their successful season, the girls were defeated 2-0 in the quarterfinal match. "I couldn't be more proud. I couldn't have asked for a better group," explained Coach Lewis. "I certainly couldn't have asked to play any better then they played. We didn't lose on mistakes and we are not a team of blarners, so we played a really good match, against a really good team, and they left it all on the field. I couldn't be more proud of them." The end of the season also means saying farewell to the graduating members of the senior girls soccer team: Megan. Johnston, Kayla McCabe, Lauren Doherty, Sofia Barros, Kyra Lewis, Selena Reitsma and Payten Lang. According to team captain and graduating senior, Lau- ren Doherty, the goal of the team this year was to improve their skills through- out the season and to make it to OFSAA. "The quarterfinal game was a heartbreaker for all of us. Even though we lost, I am so proud of our team and how far we have come," Doherty said. "We worked so hard to get to OFSAA and even though we did not win a medal, being one of the top eight soccer teams in Ontario is something we are proud of and is an accomplishment for all the hard work we put in over the course of the season." In order to achieve these goals, the girls practiced three times a week in the mornings and took each other, each game and each competitor seriously. "As captain I made sure that my team mates felt comfortable with each other and myself. I wanted to make sure that team bonding was prioritized because I believe if there is strong team chemistry, the www.ofsaa.on.ca CoablbMbd pato The Goderich Vikings senior girls soccer team travelled to Etobicoke last week to compete against the top high schools In Ontario at the OFSAA tournament. Members of the 2017 team include: Coach Ray Lewis, Kayla McCabe, Megan Johnston, Ellora Rogers, Lauren Doherty, Josephine Noel, Kailee Hewitt, Sofia Barros, Kyra Lewis, Shea Frayne, Haley Bowman, Matti Conaster, Brooklyn Bean, Neeliah Lewis, Selena Reitsma, Riley Shore, Bryn') Lewis, Kendra Menchenton, Savannah Freeman, Payten Lang, Fiona Mcllhargey and Shannon Squire. team will work well together on the field," stated Doherty. Doherty, along with six other teammates, will be graduating and not return- ing to play for the GDCI Vikings senior girls soccer team next year. "This is my last year as a GDCI Viking and I am sad that I have to say goodbye to these amazing girls and my 'dedicated coaches Ray Lewis and. Karly Iioward," explained Doherty regarding moving on from GDCI. "I have made memories throughout this season that I am going to cherish. Playing high school sports has made Maitland Senior Men's Golf League May 29 brought beautiful spring weather, and along with it, a great night for golf at The Maitland. Will Thompson took first low net with a score of 30, while Denis Lassaline and John Wehrle won first low gross with a score of 40. Closest to the pin on hole #1 went to Tom Smith, and second low gross went to Jack IKellough, with ascore of 41. Other winners included Jim McCaffery with a score. of 31, Carl Suchard with 34.7, Bob Graham with 36 Brian Allen with 36.5 and. Gary Johnston with 37. May 30 was the first of this year's shotgun start events for The Maitland Senior . Men's Golf League. The game for May was a scramble with the league being split into 'A' and 'B' flights for the day. There were close contests in both of the flights. In 'A' flight the team of Dennis Lassaline and Doug Mikltish overcame the dis- advantage of playing with only two men to shoot 33, the best round of the day and win top prize. The GDCI senior girls soccer team had quite a successful season, finish- ing second in regular sea- son eason play and advancing to compete at OFSAA among the top eight teams in Ontario. Theteam will say farewell to seven players, but have. next season to begin plan- ning for and to look forward to, building off the success of this year. The first of these was the team of Miker Demchuk, Ken Hunter, Marc Monfor- ton and Dave Vanderwatec Also at 35 was the team of Barry Mitchell, Frank Young and George Zolob. Rounding out the second place tie was the team of Chris conn Bob Corrigan and Bill Tranter. '13' flight was also tight with two teams tying for top spot with 38's. The first of these was the team of Phil Maier, Mike O'Brien, Tom. Arthur and Bob Glen who were joined on the top step of the podium by the team of Al Dekker, Dennis Schmidt and .Tim Collins. The Teague also gave out the normal weekly prizes for exceptional shots made. Gerry Bouchard won the State Farm closest to the hole prize on .#1 and Joe George, with an assist from Gary Kloepfer, won the MicroAge Basics prize for closest to the pin on #7.. The Rona longest putt prize on #4 went to Bern Marsden, Dennis Lassaline won the Toyota longest putt prize on #3 and Ken Hunter was the winner of the Edward Fuels long putt prize on 08.
