Advancing to OFSAA was
a season goal for the girls of
the GDCI Vikings senior soc-
cer team.
Last week the girls trav-
elled to Etobicoke to com-
pete against the top schools
in the 'A' division at the
OFSM tournament.
Placed in Pool D, the sen-
ior girls played in four Pool
games, competing against
Jean Vanier Catholic from
Richmond Hill, Pere Rene de
Galinee- from Cambridge,
Louis Riel from Ottawa and
Cite des Jeunes from
Kapuskasing.
The girls defeated Jean
Vanier 4=0 as well as Cite
des Jeunes•3-0 and they
tied two games, 0-0 versus
Pere Rene and 1-1 versus
Louis Riel.
Finishing in second place
in Pool D with eight points,
the girls advanced to the
quarterfinal match last
Thursday, competing
against Hamilton District
Christian.
"The grunt match, or the
quarterfinal game, you have
to do everything you can to
win that game. Sometimes
you get the bounces and
sometimes you don't,"
Coach Ray Lewis stated after
theheartbreakingdefeat in
the quarterfinal match at
OFSAA.
In a heart -breaking end to
their successful season, the
girls were defeated 2-0 in the
quarterfinal match.
"I couldn't be more proud.
I couldn't have asked for a
better group," explained
Coach Lewis.
"I certainly couldn't have
asked to play any better then
they played. We didn't lose
on mistakes and we are not a
team of blarners, so we
played a really good match,
against a really good team,
and they left it all on the
field. I couldn't be more
proud of them."
The end of the season also
means saying farewell to the
graduating members of the
senior girls soccer team:
Megan. Johnston, Kayla
McCabe, Lauren Doherty,
Sofia Barros, Kyra Lewis,
Selena Reitsma and Payten
Lang.
According to team captain
and graduating senior, Lau-
ren Doherty, the goal of the
team this year was to
improve their skills through-
out the season and to make
it to OFSAA.
"The quarterfinal game
was a heartbreaker for all of
us. Even though we lost, I am
so proud of our team and
how far we have come,"
Doherty said.
"We worked so hard to get
to OFSAA and even though
we did not win a medal,
being one of the top eight
soccer teams in Ontario is
something we are proud of
and is an accomplishment
for all the hard work we put
in over the course of the
season."
In order to achieve these
goals, the girls practiced
three times a week in the
mornings and took each
other, each game and each
competitor seriously.
"As captain I made sure
that my team mates felt
comfortable with each
other and myself. I wanted
to make sure that team
bonding was prioritized
because I believe if there is
strong team chemistry, the
