The Walk of Life event saw a great number of partici- pants who went out last Sat- urday to raise awareness and support the local Cardiac Program. Many local businesses sponsored the event, such as Compass Minerals, Maitland Valley Marina, Watson's Home hardware and Michael Strickland of 1-iollisWealth. Since the beginning of the Goderich and area Healthy Hearts program in 1995, an annual Walk of Life has been offered to those in the com- munity and is the biggest Health Hearts fundraiser of the year. Those who took part in the Walk of Life donated a mini- mum of $20. The walk is sponsored by the Cardiac Health Foundation of Can- ada and is held the first Sat- urday in June. The last two years, the Walk of Life event was host to 90 participants and in the last two years, Healthy Hearts raised between $8, 000 and $10, 000. "This fun event helps us raise awareness of the Healthy Hearts Cardiac Rehabilitation Program and is our biggest opportunity to build funds for this impor- tant community program. All monies raised stays here supporting local causes with local dollars," explained Healthy Hearts Program Director, Jane Shackleton, RCT. Healthy Hearts is a non- funded, not-for-profit Car- diac Rehabilitation Pro- gram that offers exercise, education and support to the residents of Huron County. "With heart disease being one of the three leading causes of death in Canada, the Healthy Hearts Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is a vital community resource. We receive over 100 new referrals each year for peo- ple who have experienced a cardiac event," added Shackleton. ilArm li 11 i1),`. The organizers and volunteers of the annual Walk of Life event.
