Gateway Centre
of Excellence in
Rural Health's six
student researchers
Gateway Centre of Excellence in
Rural Health is pleased to host six
students this summer.
Each student will be working on
a particular health research project
of interest to them. The students
hope that these projects will
improve the health and wellbeing
of the local community.
Melissa Roetcisoender recently
completed her Bachelor of Arts in
Social Development Studies from
the University of Waterloo, with a
minor in Gerontology.
This summer, under the supervi-
sion of Dr. Feng Chang and Dr. Agnes
Kluz, she will explore youth addic-
tions and mental health in Huron,
Perth, Grey and Bruce counties.
In the fall, Melissa will be return-
ing to the University of Waterloo for
her Bachelor of Social Work.
Alex Conlon recently completed
his second year of medical school
at The Royal College of Surgeons in
Dublin, Ireland.
He is excited to be working on a

project focused on educating
patients on a new drug for Schizo-
phrenia at the five outpatient clin-
ics in Huron County.
Alex will continue his schooling in
Ireland in the fall and plans on prac-
ticing in Canada after he graduates.
Melissa Cammuso is a third -year
Pharmacy student at the University
of Waterloo School of Pharmacy.

Prior to this; she completed her
Bachelor of Science in Honours
Behavioral Neuroscience at Con-
cordia University in Montreal, QC,
her hometown.
During her employment with
Gateway, Melissa will be researching
substance use among youth in local
rural communities under the super-
vision of Dr. Chang and Dr. Kluz.
While in Huron County, Melissa
will also be working as a student
pharmacist at the Huron Commu-
nity Family Health Team.
Myles Krahn is a student from
Central Huron Secondary School,
currently completing a four-month
co-op placement at Gateway.
Upon completion of his co-op work
term, Myles will remain with Gateway
as a full-time summer student working
on promoting the Hometown Heroes
hockey game, while also updating
Gateway's promotional information
and refurbishing the website.
Elizabeth Dwyer will be working
with Gateway this summer on the
Moments Matter campaign for the
Huron Residential Hospice.
Additionally, she will be working
with the Goderich Downtown BIA
as an Economic Development and
Data Collection Associate.
Elizabeth is a recent graduate of
the Bachelor of Humanities degree
with a minor in biology at Carleton
University in Ottawa, Ontario.
Pl Conlon joins Gateway having
recently completed his first year at
Amherst College in Western Mas-
sachusetts where he is completing
a liberal arts degree program with a
focus on life sciences.
Pi will be conducting a research
project, which will evaluate the
impact of physical activity on men-
tal health for patients of the five
outpatient clinics in Huron County.
In addition to this project, PJ will
be assisting in planning the Home-
town Heroes hockey game, which
he will be playing in for the third
time on July 20.
