34 Signal Star • Wednesday, May 31, 2017 Coffee. Cross and Donuts Once again this year, the Saugeen and Maitland Valley Conservation Authorities will be offering the Coffee, Crops and Donuts workshop series for local farmers. Over 300 farmers attended the workshops last year to learn about soil conserva- tion measures. The workshops are taught by farmers, for farmers, with the aim of sharing experi- ences and methods in implementing best manage- ment practices on a variety of farms. Each session features a local farmer speaking about their practices and sharing what they've learned about various soil conservation measures. Everyone is then free to ask questions and dis- cuss issues. These events provide landowners with an oppor- tunity to see best management practices in action, problem -solve and talk shop with their neigh- bours over an extended cof- fee break. "It's been a terrific pro- gram and we're very pleased to be able to offer it again for the farm community," stated Luke Charbonneau, Chair of Saugeen Conservation. "There are some excellent practices happening out there in the agricultural community and these work- shops provide an opportu- nity to champion these initiatives:' "We are pleased to be partnering with Maitland Conservation again on this endeavour; continued Char- bonneau. "Maitland Conser- vation has been working with farm communities for many years and it's great to benefit from their years of experience:' Tori Waugh, Saugeen Conservation's Agricultural Outreach Coordinator has been working with the farm community to choose rele- vant topics for this year's sessions including cover crop seeding equipment modifications, using bio - solids to improve soil struc- ture, erosion control struc- tures, switchgrass management and more. An interesting aspect of the Coffee, Crops and Donuts workshop series is that all the materials, resources and technical expertise is provided and shared unreservedly by local farmers, businesses, and organizations. This year a greater diversity of professionals from the agricultural industry will be speaking at Coffee, Crops & Donuts work- shops. In addition, CEU credits will be provided at each workshop for Certi- fied Crop Advisors. The next Coffee, Crops and Donuts Workshop will be held on June 13th from 9:00 am to 11:00 am, at Gerard Grubb's, 585 EIora Street, Mildmay. The topic is Cover Crop Seeding Equip- ment Modifications with Deb Campbell, Agronomy Advantage. All Coffee, Crops and Donuts workshops are free of charge. Everyone is welcome. Support for this project was provided through the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association from the GLASI Education and Out- reach Component funded by the Ontario Ministry of Agri- culture, Food and Rural Affairs and Agriculture and Agri -Food Canada through Growing Forward 2, a fed- eral -provincial -territorial initiative. Interested landowners can register online at coffee- cropsdonuts.eventbrite.com.
