The Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation (LHCCC) and. Red Cat will bring awareness to the issue and to be a part of the solution. Christian and Sophie Burdan, the owners of the Red Cat Farm, have set a goal of serving their customers without utilizing plastic bags. They began by designing a collection of re -usable bags that people could choose to purchase and use for their shopping as well as to sup- port coastal conservation, as a great portion of the sales go directly to the LHCCC. To encourage their customers to remember to bring their re -usable Red Cat bag when they come .to do their weekly shopping, the bakery is excited to intro- duce a reward program, which gives customers incentive to reduce their "plastic footprint': After purchasing a. jute bag, each time an individual uses it for a certain amount of purchases, they receive a GODERICH is Cddrainy, its 190th Birthday! The idea began after Sophie attended a confer- ence led by Jennifer Pate in Bayfield a year ago, where the health of the Great Lakes was discussed. It had been a very eye- opening meeting. Sophie was not aware that the Lakes are so greatly polluted and "need OUR help' With Jennifer's motiva- tional speech, Sophie became inspired and knew "this was it': Sophie says she had been searching for something her family business could support and identify them selves with for quite a while" Sophie and her family moved to Canada from Europe in 2008, and since then the farm has been very successful. "We wanted to thank the community by giving some- thing back, and helping to keep the Great Lakes healthy...which in turn is good for the people': Sophie continues to explain that, "being organic farmers, and baking healthy sourdough bread made with only simple and natural ingredients, [they] care very much about the environment and the health of [their] customers". In this way, Christian and Sophie believe that this cam- paign is the perfect move to make to return their grati- tun -back to those two things, in the place they love to live in. Sophie concludes: "we choose to do this intuitively. It may be a small act (for now), but it is something that supports everything we consciously believe in, and this is why we do it. We hope YOU become inspired, will welcome this movement, and challenge yourselves to do something for the com- mon good. Listen to your inner voice, act local to change global, and `Let's Keep Them Great."' Find the Red Cat at 82560 Bluewate.r Highway, Goderich.
