Celebrating a 97th birthday on June 2, Margaret Young is the last remaining chartered member of the Legion Ladies Auxiliary
Branch 109.
Born and raised in Richmond, B.C. Margaret was the eldest sister of three. With only a grade 11 education when the war started,
Margaret found her first job in Ottawa as a secretary for the govemment.
As a secretary and based at the Upland Airbase in Ottawa, Margaret met and fell in love with Corporal Harold Young, a mechanic
working on airplanes.
Margaret and Harold were married in 1943 and welcomed their first child in 1944.
Post-war, the Youngs moved to Goderich, Harold's hometown, and built a new home on Bennett Street East in 1947, where they
raised their four children.
Harold joined the Goderich Legion as a veteran and Margaret helped start the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, as there was no Auxiliary
women's service group in Goderich. Over the years, Margaret held every executive position of the Auxiliary.
According to her daughter Dianne, Margaret enjoyed working and always looked forward to help organize the banquets, and
Dianne's parents enjoyed dancing at the Legion every Saturday night.
"In the early years we remember as children, taking turkeys to Culbert's Bakery to have them cooked, then returning to deliver
the turkey back to the Legion, climbing flights of stairs to the third floor with trays of sliced turkey for the banquets," Dianne
reminisced.
Margaret spent her time in Goderich giving to the community: she volunteered at the Goderich Hospital doing patients' hair and
she worked for the Goderich Post Office for 23 years.
