HomeMy WebLinkAboutGoderich Signal Star, 2017-05-31, Page 1616 Signal Star • Wednesday, May 31, 2017 Huron County 4-H The second meeting of the 4-11 IPM County Plowers was held on May 10, 2017 at the O.M.A.F.R.A Office in Clinton at 7pm. After all of the members arrived, they were formed into five groups, then each mem- ber said something that the group all had in common, such as "we all like the IPM" and "we all love animals': After the group went around saying all that they had in common, a picture was taken for The Citizen for their IPM series. President Brooklyn Hen- driks opened the meeting with the 4-H pledge then did roll call: "what are you look- ing forward in this club?': Most members answered that they are excited to help out in the 4-H tent at the 2017 IPM. Then the club moved on to business, where Jessalyn Hendriks gave the press report, followed by the treas- urer's report made by Austin Bieman. So far the 4-H Club has sold 51 IPM bows to go towards purchasing club t -shirts to wear at the IPM. Club leader, Jolande Oud- shoorn applied for the 4-H Connecting Canadians Fund sponsored by Canada 150, The Government of Canada, TransCanada, and McDon- ald's Canada. The funding would go towards creating and running the events in the tent such as buying paint to make signs or straw for animal displays. Another leader, Reg Vinni- combe, applied for the Jour- ney2050 sponsored by Agrium to help out with the 4-H tent costs at the 2017 i MP meeting Club members presented their ideas for. the 4-H IPM tent, while Leader Jolande Oudshoorn wrote them all down on the board. IPM and luckily the club received them both. After business was taken care of, the club then got into groups and played a match- ing game, learning about planning an event. Then the club brain- stormed of what could be in their 4-H tent such as, a photo booth, history facts about Huron County 4-H, a livestock display, and a seed activity and each group pre- sented their ideas. As a final activity, the club members went outside to play Rock Paper Scissors Football, where everyone had a blast. The leaders summarized all the activities that the 4-H Club would have in the tent. The next meeting will be held on June 14, 2017 at the O.M.A.F.R.A Office in Clin- ton at7pm. • Shawn Loughlin interviewed Ben Speer, Megan Metske, Brooklyn Hendriks and Bernadette Terpstra for the IMP series. Discovery Week at AMGH Four first-year medical students spent a week learning at AMGH Kathleen Smith Goderich Signal Star Last week was Discovery Week, which meant that 168 first year medical students from Western University's Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry spread out to more than 30 communities in South-westem Ontario. The students received hands-on learning experiences in rural and regional commu- nities hospitals and clinics. Alexandra Marine and General Hospital was host to four students: Shelby Wallace from North Bay, Cassie Poole from Wallaceburg, Michelle Cornfield from Owen Sound and Tiago Ribeiro from Oakville. The first year medical stu- dents shadowed physicians and visited patients to gain a better understanding of how patient care is delivered, during their weeklong stay at AMGH. Discovery Week offers a unique learning opportunity by providing hands on learn- ing experiences and an understanding of the diverse experiences which impact health and wellness.
